WAITARA NEWS

FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE. Referring generally to the Waitara freezing works dispute, the president of the union, Mr. T. B. Ewens, has stated that the union did not desire to bring other weapons to bear from other trade rmions as that would embroil New Zealand in a large industrial trouble. As the employers had not seen fit to discuss new proposals submitted by the federation of the freezing workers’ organisation they were now waiting for the employers to move in the matter for a conference and a conciliatory settlement on a fair basis. . , . ■ ~ There was a large attendance at yesterday morning’s meeting of the union, which lasted for 2| hours, but it was stated at. its conclusion that there were no fresh developments to report. The determination of the men had not altered. A general meeting of unionists, with their wives and friends, was held yesterday afternoon, the main purpose being to acquaint the womenfolk why the menfolk were resisting the employers’ new terms. The meeting was largely attended, about 50 women being present. The speakers were Messrs. T. B. Ewens, C. Topp and W. Wordsworth, who each gave a resume of the position of the dispute. At the conclusion of the a women’s committee was formed to take part and assist in a Christmas tree gathering for the children and to arrange a mart. The vessel Kapui, which went aground on the East beach last week, has been on the slip for inspection to ascertain what damage was caused. It is reported that she has not. sustained any appre-ciable-damage.
