UNEMPLOYED BOYS

NEW SOUTH WALES PROBLEM. POSITION AN ACUTE ONE. Approximately 31,000 boys in New South Wales, between the ages of 16 and 20 years, are unemployed, according to an estimate made by the Vocational Guidance Bureau. The- Education Department expects that about 12,000 boys will leave school this month. Thus it will be seen the problem of the unemployed boy is an acule one, and in official circles the opinion is expressed that something approaching a national effort is necessary to avert a tragic condition. The Unemployment Relief Council, at a recent meeting, decided to co-ordinate the work of the committees acting under its auspices, in order that a combined front might be presented and overlapping avoided. It is intended at as early a date as possible to house the committees in one building, with easy access to each other, in order that the junior labour requirements of employers may be expeditiously satisfied. In order that the actual number of unemployed youths in each suburb might be accurately gauged, the co-operation of 53 suburban municipal, councils was recently sought toward establishing at each local council chambers a registry of local unemployed youths. Most of the councils have approved the proposal, and public meetings are to be called in many suburbs to point out the acuteness of the position. The boys’ work sub-committee has arranged • a “Boys’ Week” for the purpose of exciting public interest in the movement. Church congregations will be exhorted. to. assist, in relieving unemployment wherever possible;
