MARLBOROUGH AERO CLUB

HAWERA ’PLANES VISIT BLENHEIM GATHERING MARRED BY WIND. After some delay on account of uncertain weather, the Western Federated Flying Club's fleet of four aeroplanes left Hawera at 8.45 a.m. on Saturday to attend the opening of the new clubhouse at Blenheim. Only one brief stop was made, to pick up Captain S. A, Gibbons at Wanganui, and the ’planes then headed direct for Blenheim from Paekakariki, where they arrived •at 12 o’clock, the actual flying time being 2J hours. A strong westerly head wind made conditions unfavourable for flying so that the events set down for competition had to be abandoned. Captain Burrell, from Sockbum, took a ’plane up for a height-guessing competition, after which the new clubhouse was officially opened by Mr. McKenzie, Mayor of Blenheim. HAWERA’S CONGRATULATIONS. Mr. Brian Haybittie, captain of the Hawera Club, delivered from Dr. W. F. Buist, president, a congratulatory mes-. sage sent on behalf of the club. He referred to the fact that the Hawera and Blenheim clubs, were joined by" a bond of sympathy in that they had benefited jointly in the proceeds of an art union. Other speakers were the president of the Marlborough Aero Club, Mr. A. Dix, and Mr. G. M. SpenCe, on behalf of the New Zealand Aero Club. The new clubhouse is a fine structure, costing approximately £2OOO. Windows form most of the wall of the main social room; two bedrooms are available for visiting pilots, while there is an extremely well-appointed kitchen with up-to-date heating appliances. After the official opening an exhibition flight of acrobatics by Flying-Officer Durant, Hastings, thrilled even the most veteran of the members.

On Sunday the Hawera visitors were taken for a motor trip round Blenheim and to Picton. The planes left at 2.30 p.m., and after stopping' at Palmerston North and Wanganui, arrived at Hawera after about 3A hours’ actual flying time. Captain Gibbons came to Hawera and then returned with one plane to Wanganui. Two of the remaining planes were flown to New Plymouth last evening by New Plymouth pilots.
