ROYAL ACADEMY MUSIC AWARDS.

PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. A pleasant gathering took place at the Methodist Sunday School Hall, Hawera, yesterday afternoon when the awards made during the year were presented to the successful entrants in the Royal Academy of Music examinations. Mr. F. W. Horner was in the chair. A short musical programme was first presented by some of those who had received examination awards. The programme was as follows: — Pianoforte solo, Farewell to the Fairies (Carrol), Jocelyn Evans; pianoforte solo; Butterfly (Greig), Lynn Henderson; violin solo, L’Oure (Bach), Alan Horner; pianoforte solo, Joan Wilson; song, “O Star Of Eve - (Wagner), Joseph Crawford; pianoforte solo, Impromptu (Schubert), Gwen Chadwick. . Before calling on Mrs. Homer to present the certificates Mr. Homer congratulated the district on the increased entries for the examination; last year was a record with 75 entries. This year there were 85. The standard of the work was high. The majority of the entrants had passed their' examinations. In the written 'tests in June, 16 of 20 entrants had passed; in September 51 of 57 had passed the practical examination. Two L.A.B. diplomas had been granted—to Miss Joyce Dix (teacher’s), and Mr. J. Crawford (performer’s), both in the singing section. 'Mr. Homer stressed the value of the examinations; they encouraged concentration in the children. The judge’s mark sheets sho'wed errors'and progress. The certificates were a measure of definite progress. Mrs. Horner then presented the certificates to the successful students.

SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY. METHODIST TEA AND PRIZEGIVING. The anniversary tea and prizegiving in connection with the Hawera Methodist Church took place last night. Following an enjoyable tea, at which there was a large attendance of children, parents and friends, the annual report was read by the Superintendent, Mr. T. J. Hurrell, and the prizes were presented by Mrs. Hurrell. During the evening there was special singing by the children, those contributing solos being Noeline Smith, Elsie Hartmann, Frances Wills, Cora Gribble, Lionel Hartmann and Eva Stewart. There was also a duet by Joyce Knightbridge and Beryl Grindrod. The prize list was:— Robert Raikes diplomas and. Bibles (seven years): Betty Yearbury, Noeline Smith. Young Worshippers’ League prizes: Rhoda Watson, Betty Yearbury, Noeline Smith, Elsie Smith. Others to whom prizes were awarded were Betty Yearbury, Tom Hurrell, Noeline Smith, Vivienne Gelle,. Louis Fox, Ruth Hurrell, Jack Crompton, Jim Yearbury, Trevor Howell, Ernest Wilmhurst, Violet Goodman, Joyce Knightbndge, Jean Grindrod, Norton Knightbridge, Lionel Hartmann, Olive Roberts, Olga Fox, Phyllis Wells, Iris Wells, Gwen Weils, Margaret Fox, Jessie Stuart, Emma Gribble, David Roberts, Doris Madgwick, Jim- Oakes, Ron Oakes, Bruce . Oakes, Cora Gribble.

PATEA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. SUNDAY SCHOOL PRIZE-GIVING. A z delightful concert programme was the feature of the annual prize-giving ceremony at Knox Church, Patea, when the Rev. A. W. Smaill presided over a large gathering of parents, pupils and friends on Friday. • Mr. Smaill spoke ■ of the pleasure it gave him to be 1 able to state that over 40 children attended the Sunday school. He thanked the teachers on behalf of the congregation for their valuable work. Prizes were distributed, the following being the recipients: Peter Lester, George Lund, Bruce Glenny, Donald Glenny, James Barkley, Stewart Barkley, John Taylor, Noeline Johnson, Susie Reid, lan Reid, James Black, Peter Hunger, Arthur Taylor, Gregg Taylor, D’Arcy Taylor, Ann Row, Jack Close, Avis Lund, Bertha Reid, Sylvia Hardaker, Inez. Hardaker, Clairence Hardaker, Reg Row, Chrissie Bennie, Andrew Bennie, Betty Close, Brian Hunter, Alison Hamel, Thelma Reid, Margaret Naismith, Pat Taylor, Ruth Millan, Philip Close, Thomas Rocheford, Neil Johansen, Wilson Smaill, John Hunger, Betty Balsillie, Knox Black.

Assembly examination prize: Margaret Naismith. Most regular attendance: Andrew Bennie, Chrissie Bennie, Margaret Naismith, Wilson Smaill, Robert Black. Special Scripture prizes: Ruth Millan, Chrissie Bennie. Outstanding in the concert programme was a clever presentation of a historical play in which was featured the period costumes from'the time of the Conqueror to the present day, the following children appearing: Clarence Hardaker, Inez Hardaker,' Sylvia '' Hardaker, Vivienne Wills, Yvonne. Close, Betty Close, Knox Black, Molly Williams, Joan Clark, Molly Roots,. Phyllis. Hermon, Ivan Hermon, Joyce Goodwin, Naomi Fowler, Pat Taylor and Alma Lord. A pianoforte number was given by Margaret Naismith and songs by Athalia. Roots and Arthur Scott. Another clever item was the wand drill, Misses N. Fowler, Hardaker, V. Willis arid P. Hermon participating! In a short play Joan Clark, Audrey Blackman and Margaret' Naismith appeared, supported by a band of fairies. The teachers arid officers felt amply rewarded'for'the labour of the past 12 moriths, stated the report. There were on the roll 80 scholars, and a membership of 18 in the young men’s class and 12 in the young women’s class. There were 16 teachers and officers. Tribute was paid, to the work of the late Mrs. G. Syme and the late Mr. J. Yearbury. Others who had severed their connection with the work as teachers were Mesdarnes Smith and Laurent, Misses Sheat, M. Emmitt, O. Archbold and Mr. Stebbing. New teachers were Mrs. Barrett, Miss J. Dix and Mr. T. Johnson. Miss M- Archbold as. secretary and Miss B. Seed as librarian had done. good work. Although a change had. been made in meeting from afternoon to morning during the sumnier Mesdames Mills., and Barrett had continued school in the afternoon by holding a junior endeavour. Thanks were due to Miss Mollie Hurrell for her work as pianist, to Mr. H. C. A. Fox, who conducted the anniversary singing, and to Mrs. F. C. King, organist. The Sunday School building fund stood at £44 7s.
