TOURNAMENT AT HAWERA. FIVE KNOCK-OUT RESULTS. An amateur boxing tournament was held in the Hawera football gymnasium last night. Some good bouts were staged and there was a satisfactory attendance. Five of the 12 contests did not go the full distance. Results are:— P. Huzziff (Ratapiko) 8.11 beat K. Ham (Eltham) 10.0, technical knock-out. G. H. Nicholls (Otakeho) 8.7 beat H. Horridge (Patea) 8.4, technical knockout. P. O’Keefe (Midhirst) 10.5 beat K. Reid (Eltham) 10.8, on points. G. Cuff (Kaponga) 10.13 beat Cowley (Ratapiko) 10.8, technical knock-out. H. Hudson (Otakeho) 10.0 beat R. Wills (Patea) 10.9, on points. L. Lines (Rowan) 9.10 beat S. O’Keefe (Midhirst) 10.0, on a foul. R. Nairne (Marton) 11.6 beat Rumball (Ratapiko) 11.2, on points. H. Ellis (Patea) 10.4 beat T. Muir (Riverlea) 9.11, on points. G. Thomas (Ngaere) 9.3 beat Jock Wilson (Marton) 9.4, on points. P. Murphy (Kaponga) 12.4 beat L. O’Keefe (Midhirst) 12.0, knock-out.. . G. VISIT OF WANGANUI TEAM. A cricket match was played at Waverley during the week-end between a Wanganui team ' and Waverley. The weather was showery but did not seriously interfere • with play. .. HERBERT SMITH TRUST CUPS. TROPHIES FOR PATEA ATHLETICS. Two valuable cups have been granted by the Herbert Smith Trust Fund executors in response to the Patea Amateur Athletic Club’s request. The cups will be used as points prizes for the Wednesday evening competitions. The awards will be in the junior sections, one cup for girls and one for boys ranging from 9 years to 15 years. Ten races for'the girls have already been held, and a commencement will be made with an event for, boys at the next Wednesday meeting.
STARR-BOWKETT SOCIETY. •HAWERA ANNUAL MEETING. The ■ 30th annual general meeting of the Hawera Starr-Bowkett Building Society was held last night. A ballot for the election of-directors for ordinary vacancies resulted in the re-election of retiring directors, Messrs. R. Tait, W. Crompton and H. Robinson. The shareholders’ auditor (Mr. J. W. Harding) was re-elected. . A ballot was held, to appropriate £BOO in the Second Group. The winners were Mr. L. G. Lewis (Hawera) and Mrs. Annie Anthony (Kakaramea), each winning £4OO. . SHOOTING ON OPEN RANGE. HAWERA DEFENCE CLUB PRACTICE. The Hawera Defence Rifle Club fired a practice shoot at 300, 500 and 600 yards on Saturday. Rain and a fresh, strong and gusty wind made shooting very uncertain. Shepard, with 132 off the rifle, and Vinten and Evans, with 130, shot well. The best scores were:—
PERSONAL. The death occurred at the Patea hospital yesterday, after an illness of some months’ duration, of Mr. John (Fiery) Wright, a well-known resident of Patea. Mr. Wright leaves a widow, formerly Miss Nora McKenna, but no family. Mr. Wright was bom at Balclutha 59 years ago. For nine years he was foreman butcher at Borthwick’s freezing works at Christchurch, and he held a similar position at the Patea works for four and a-half years. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS.
