HAWERA ITEMS.

Mrs. W. J. Bright is spending a holiday at Masterton. Mrs. W. G. Walkley left last weekend to spend a few days at Dannevirke. Miss Molly Black is spendi. a short holiday at Palmerston North. Miss Gladys Lees returns to her home at Okaiawa this week. There was a splendid attendance at the club on Monday evening for the Play-reading Circle’s August evening, when two one-act plays, “The Son,” by John Galsworthy, and “Seven Women,” by J. M. Barrie, were read. Mesdames A. M. Young, C. G. Trotter, R. F. Page and W. Fyfe, Misses M. Burgess, B. Young and Knight. Opportunity was taken at the interval of saying farewell to Mrs. ,0. Frey berg, who has been an enthusiastic circle member. Miss D. Corrigan spoke on behalf of the circle and presented the departing member with a volume of J. M. Barrie’s plays. Mrs. McL’Dowie of the gardening circle presented Mrs. Freyberg with a magnificent bouquet, tho work of Miss J. MacDonald. The second half of the evening was taken up with a short talk on theatres and theatricals in London and Zealand, personalities met by Mies Gladys Gammon, who was introduced by Miss Corrigan. Miss Gammon delighted everyone with her recital of the death of Minnehaha and several musical monologues. Among those present were Mesdames W. A. O’Callaghan, R. F. Page, Collins, O. K. Tennent, H. Glenn, E. Murdoch, M. Burgess, M. C. Power; Riddle (Sydney), Harkness, Molly McLean, Crabb, K. Coleman, E. Caplen, E. Spence Knight and B. Young.
