JUNIOR RED CROSS CONCERT

WESTOWN SCHOOL CIRCLE. Two concerts, one in the afternoon, for their school mates and another in the evening for their adult friends were given yesterday by the- Westown school Junior Red Cross Circle. The object of the entertainments was to raise funds to pay the dental clinic fees of those children whose parents were unable to afford them. It was hoped there would also be a small balance for the New Plymouth branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Association. The Presbyterian Sunday school hall was lent for the functions.

The afternoon concert was opened by Nancy Poynter with a piano solo. Recitations were contributed by Barbara Church, Leslie Coleman, Verna Ulander, Nola Knapp, Jim Church, Willie McArthur, Fay Turnbull and Barbara Roebuck Unison songs were sung by groups of Junior Red Cross boys and girls. Fay Turnbull, Barbara Roebuck and Bertha Somerville gave an amusing little sketch, as did Bob Seldon and Jim Church. Nancy and Alison McQueen sang a duet and their sister, Mary McQueen, sang “Fairy Time.” The accompaniments for the singing were played by Miss Simpson and Miss Berenice Bigwood, secretary of the circle.

Several of the same performers repeated their afternoon items for the evening concert, which was well attended. Additional recitations were given by the older girls of the circle. So_gs were sung by Joyce Roebuck and Ethel Eva. Piano solos were played by Rosa Knapman and Nancy Poynter and recitations were given by Margery Carter and Irene Luscombe. The first half finished with a violin solo by Alex Brown, and Miss McPhillips recited and Mrs. Davies and Miss Bigwood played accompaniments. After the interval Mrs. Brown, Miss Train and Miss Wright gave an amusing play, “Between the Soup and the Savoury,” to conclude the programme. Mr. W. A. Brown, headmaster of the school, expressed the gratitude of the circle to Mrs. Seldon and Mrs. Southam, who had assisted circle affairs generally this year, and to all those who had assisted with the programme.
