RELIEF OF DISTRESS

DISTRICT NURSE ASSOCIATION. The monthly committee meeting, of the New Plymouth District Nurse Association was held on Tuesday, Mrs. .V. Griffiths presiding. Others present were Mesdames E. Brash, C. Berg, A. Bailey, T. C. Fookes, P. C. Garnham, J. White, Sister Gill, Mrs. G. Loveridge and the honorary secretary. ■ Sympathy was expressed with Doctors G. Home and W. IVade in their bereavement. The secretary reported on the work of the sewing committee and that a generous donation of £lO had been received from the Kent Road-Korito Ladies’ Sewing Guild to purchase material to make into garments for poor families. This was obtained as a result of the recent mart held at New Plymouth. The members expressed great appreciation of this practical help and a vote of thanks was passed to the Kent Road-Korito members.

The financial report was received, it being very Satisfactory owing to the recent successful house to house and street' collection.

The secretary spoke of the continued success of the pound scheme and Sister Gill also testified to the great help this was to many families. Sister Gill’s report stated: Nursing visits have been much the same, but cases of distress are still numerous, fresh cases continually arising. New patients on the register number 16, discharged 12, remaining 10, transferred to hospital 2, visit to homes (treatments and advice) 149; visits to home (inquiries) 115, visits to charitable aid recipients 25, telephone calls 168, clothing supplied 13 families (153 articles). Sixty-one families received parcels of clothing from the clothes drive depot at the Soldiers’ Club. The association gratefully acknowledged. the following gifts: Clothing, Mesdames Martin, Stephenson,. W. Taylor, Adamson, J. M. Clarke, T. Wilsop, R. Cock, Hamilton, Skinner, Newman, M. Gray, Duff, Misses Mace, Lambie, “Sympathiser,” Baptist Ladies’ Sewing Guild (per Mrs. Eliot) Nurses’ Home and “Anon”; old linen, Miss N. Dempsey; soup, stew, puddings etc., Mesdames Skinner, Stephenson, Haughton, ,E. Humphries and Wolfe; scones, cakes, eggs etc., Mesdames A. C. Collins, Stocker, White and Duff; chair, Mrs. Dinniss. Archdeacon and Mrs. Evans supplied eight families with wood. Donations were received from Mrs. Goile and “Anon.” Bedding was received from Mesdames MacDonald and Newman.

The hon. secretary, Mrs. M. Avery, acknowledged a subscription from Mrs. T. C. Fookes.
