On Thursday afternoon Mrs. A. Coleman gave a most enjoyable afternoon. To receive her guests she wore a frock of black georgette. Among those, present were Mesdames W. O. Williams, Inwood, C. Bayley, Bennett (Manaia), Stephens (Manaia), Patterson (Manaia), Hunter and D. Caplen.

On Monday afternoon Mrs. H. McWilliam invited a few friends to her home in Victoria Street. Her frock was of blue velvet finished with lace collar and cuffs. Those present were Mesdames W. 0. Williams, Inwood, W. F. Buist, Parrington, P. Cox and O. Tonks.

Miss J. Blair, who has been the guest of Miss Alexander, Waverley, returned to Hawera early this week.

On Friday Mrs. Smart gave a most enjoyable afternoon tea to her friends. To receive her guests she wore a becoming frock of figured cre-pe.-de-chine in brown tonings. The visitors were Mesdames Bright, McDiarmid (Auckland), W. 0. Williams, Inwood (Christchurch), A. Coleman and Miss K. Coleman.

A surprise party visited Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Bramwell’s home on Saturday evening, when a' most enjoyable time was spent playing flag bridge Mrs. Bramwell’s frock was of blue French silk net with posies of dainty pink roses, with matching bridge coat and shoes. Those at the winning table were Miss Mitchell, Mr. Castleberg and Mr. Swinburn. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. H. Castleberg, Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Swinburn, Mr. and Mrs. T. F. McKenzie, Mr. and Mrs. St. Leger Reeves, Miss Mitchell, Messrs. Agar (Waipukurau), J. Swinburn (Hawke’s Bay), B. McCarthy and R. Syme.

A very enjoyable time was spent last Saturday evening, when members of the play-reading circle of the Hawera Women’s Club visited the New Plymouth Club. The play read was “The Importance of Being Earnest,” by Oscar Wilde. Miss M. Burgess acted as the stage director, while Mesdames O’Callaghan, C. Trotter, Freyberg and Woodward, Misses Glenn, A. Page, D. Corrigan and C. Reilly were the readers. Mrs. McL. Dowie, Mrs. R. F. Page and Mrs. W. Tonks were also present. After th j reading a dainty supper was served, and a chat around a cheery fire concluded a most enjoyable time. 1

Bowls of rhododendron and red and pink alonsoa and greenery made an attractive note in the drawing-room of Mrs. W. J. Bright on Tuesday, when she entertained a few friends at a very jolly afternoon tea. A cheery fire and afternoon tea with chat occupied the hours. The hostess was gowned in a becoming frock of grey and white floral ninon. °Mrs. McDiarmid (Auckland)., Mrs. Bright’s guest, wore a frock of black crepe-de-chine with deep collar and cuffs of white georgette. Mrs. Gannaway, Mrs. Lund, Miss ,N. Davis, Mr. L. A. Taylor and Mr. Langslow sang, Master lan Taylor played flute solos and Mrs. Twaddle,. Miss H. Evans and Mr. J. E. Campbell gave elocutionary items. Mrs. L. A. Taylor played the accompaniments. A sketch, “The Eternal Question,” was performed by Mr. Campbell and Mrs. Twaddle.

Mrs. G. Dyson, Hawera, visited Upper Hutt last week for the celebration of the golden wedding of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice McNabb, who lived in South Taranaki for five years, removing- to Upper Hutt 25 years ago. e is o ®

A surprise party of between-20 and 30 well-wishers visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Sharp, Skeet Road, on Moriday evening to say “goodbye” to Miss M. Noble, a member of the Matapu school staff, who leaves shortly to take up a position at the Tawhiti school. The evening was devoted to cards and ping-pong competitions and Mr. Calder delighted those present with an elocutionary item. Prior to supper Mr. G. Sherwood spoke in praise of Miss Noble’s work, both in the school and socially and asked her to accept a very serviceable handbag as a small token of the affection of her many Matapu friends. Miss Noble was accorded musical honours. Those present were Mesdames Sharp, Calder (2), Hoskin, Sherwood, Preece, Riddick, Barclay, Palmer, Hooker, Bootten, Misses Noble, Goodwin, Hoskin (2). Messrs. Sharp, Calder, Hoskin (2), Stark, Barclay, Palmer, Riddick, Sherwood, Ma'bey, Hooker (2).

A very enjoyable evening took place at the Women’s Club on Thursday, when the bridge circle met. Miss J. Macdonald acted as hostess, while Mrs. Stevens scored the bridge honours. Among the players were Mesdames Jobson, McL’Dowie, J. B. Murdoch, Stevens, R. Henderson, Dickie and Stevens, Misses Hughes and Macdonald.

Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Fyson’s home, “Glenholm,” was cheery with huge fires ort Wednesday everting, when about twenty tables were arranged for the playing of bridge and five hundred, in aid of the St. Mary’s Church bazaar. At the conclusion of the evening the Rev. J. R, Young presented the prizes to Mrs. - Dowling and Mrs. Evans, who scored the bridge honours, and Mr. Corkill and Miss Pickett for the live hundred. Mrs. Canning, Christchurch, is the guest of her sister-in-law, Mrs. W. Syme, George Street. MEREMERE LADIES’ GUILD. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Meremere ladies’ guild met at Mrs. Millar’s residence on Tuesday, those present being Miss Renowden, Mesdames Murray, Andrews, Wallace and McNaught. As the guild has completed a parcel of clothes for unemployment relief it was decided to buy material to start the ordinary sewing at the next meeting. Mrs. Old is staying with her daughter, Mrs. Gardner. WHAKAMARA FAREWELL. HAMILTON FAMILY LEAVES. There was a very large gathering at Whakamara hall on Friday night to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. W. Hamilton and family, who have gone to reside at Ohangai. Mr. Potter, chairman of the hall committee, in presenting Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton with a dinner service and an afternoon tea service from the settlers of the district, expressed sorrow at their departure, as Mr. Hamilton had always been willing to assist in the affairs of the district. He and his family would be greatly missed. The school especially would feel the departure of his family as it reduces the number on the school roll by five. At the weekly euchre party Miss Jean Davies and Mr. Beighton won the prizes. A large party of settlers visited Mokoia on Tuesday night to play the final of the euchre tournament between the two districts. Whakamara lost 'by IGSJ points to Mokoia’s 113-J points. As a result of this tournament the Mokoia and Whakamara schools benefit to the extent of £2 15s 5d each. The prizes were won by Miss Theresa Skevington (Whakamara) 1, Mrs. S. Buckerell (Whakamara) 2; Mr. H. S. Kibblewhite (Mokoia) 1, Mr. MacGregor (Mokoia) 2. WAITARA CROQUET CLUB EUCHRE. The Waitara Croquet Club held another euchre party on Thursday afternoon in the bowling club’s pavilion, there being 10 tables engaged. The winners were Mrs. St. George and Mrs. S. D George.
