CHIEF JUSTICE SEVERE
THREAT TO CLOSE DOORS
APPLAUSE FOR JURY’S VERDICT.
grave warning given by bench
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Wellington, Last Night. A verdict of not guilty was returned by a jury before the Chief Justice in the case of Bessie Burton, a married woman, who was charged with stealing cigarette gift coupons to the' value of £223, the°property of W. D. and H. O. Wills. Evidence was given that coupons were removed from storage bins at Wills’ premises, where they had been placed pending destruction. There was a mild attempt at applause at the back of the court when the verdict was given, whereupon Sir Michael Myers issued a stern warning that such conduct would not be tolerated. He ordered the doors to be’ closed and the names of the offenders taken. The police, however, were unable to identify particular offenders. The Chief Justice said if such a thing occurred again he would order the court to be cleared.
