CLOSER SETTLEMENT
“TIME NOT OPPORTUNE.” FARMERS’ OPINIONS. Opinion that the time was not opportune to encourage the Government to b?iy up land for closer settlement was expressed at a meeting of rhe M airarapa provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union at Masterton on Wednesday. The matter was raised by a letter from Mr. H. R. Renall, in which he pointed out that 378 applications had been made at the recent Hawke’s Bay land ballot, and stated that he would like to see a remit from the meeting go forward asking the Government to take up more land for the people. The president, Mr. C. C. Jackson, commented that it would take the Government all its time to keep the men already on the land there. Ho added that the Government could not get land at the present time at a price which made it economic for closer settlement. Mr. H. Bennett did not think the Farmers’ Union should encourage the Government to purchase more land for closer settlement, but that the money should be spent on improving undeveloped land. The meeting decided to reply to Mr Renall explaining the attitude it had taken up.
