Wellington, July 30. The House of Representatives debate on the Imprest Supply Bill terminated shortly after 2 o’clock this morning. The Bill was put through all stages and passed. ggUWlti IJUMUI QUESTIONS IN THE UPPER HOUSE U.S. SHIPPING COMPANIES’ TRADE Wellington, Last Night. The Imprest Supply Bill was received by the Legislative Council this afternoon from the House of Representatives. Sir Heaton Rhodes asked if it was intended to reduce the Forestry Department as a result of its amalgamation with the Lands Department. The Hon. J. A. Hanan urged that there should be a reduction in the cost of government in the direction of reducing the number of civil servants. The Hon. .W. W. Snodgrass urged that steps should be taken to prevent American shipping companies from trading in New Zealand without restriction. Sir Thomas Sidney said it was not proposed now to amalgamate the Forestry and Lands Departments. The question of American shipping was engaging the attention,, of the Government. The Local Bodies Loans (Rate of Interest) Bill and the Rent Restriction Extension Bill were . put through all stages and passed without discussion. The Council rose at 4,15 p.m. until August 11.
