At a meeting this afternoon of Southland local bodies, convened by the Southland Motor Association, the following resolutin was carried: .“That this meeting of representatives of the Southland County Council, the Wallace County Council, the Invercargill City Council, the Gore Borough Council, the Soothland provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union, and the Southland Motor Association, reaffirms, tlie resolution passed at a conference on August 16, 1930, and now strongly protests against any proposal having as its object the appropriation of motor taxation, including motor registration and tyre taxes, for any purpose other than the construction and maintenance of roads and streets; that the conference strongly opposes any diversion of funds from°the Main Highways Board, and is of opinion that such action, if taken, would be a distinct breach of faith with the ratepayers and motorists of the Dominion.”' The conference had been called following the receipt of a circular from the Wellington Automobile Club reporting that the Prime Minister had stated that he was not in favour of earmarking taxation for any purpose.
