OPUNAKE SCHOOL CONTROL
SUCCESSES IN MATRICULATION. MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. The schqoLcommittee met on Thursday. Present: Messrs. G. H. Hutton (chairman), H. H. Gilshiiqn, K. McNae. and T. P. Hughson, jnr. Mr. McNae was appointed secretary in place of Mr. A. Raynor (resigned). The headmaster, Mr. W. H. Burgess, reported that the school re-opened on Monday with a roll number in the primary of 164 and in the secondary of 45. -Some very fine results had been gained by the secondary pupils in the matriculation examination. Four pupils had passed, one of these, L. Dobbin, having been at school only two years, prior to which he had not been to school for three years. One of the others who had passed was only 14 years old. One boy had gained a partial pass in the Training College Entrance; one passfed in eight subjects and another in seven subjects of the nine, missing a partial pass by only a few marks in English; All those who sat for matriculation had returned to school for a higher-leaving certificate to enter the teaching profession.
The committee decided to. purchase two dozen volumes of English classics for use in the study of English literature.
The committee confirmed a letter forwarded by the late secretary to the Education Board again drawing attention to . the unsatisfactory working of the heating apparatus in the secondary school and hoping something would be done (before the cold weather. The committee was tired of paying £4 or £5 a month for current with ho appreciable result.
