SCUTTLING OF MARAROA
STRONG PUBLIC SENTIMENT. By telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The work of dismantling the vessels Mararoa and Tutanekai, which will be scuttled shortly, is proceeding. In connection with the passing of the Mararoa, there has been a considerable exhibition of sentiment on the part of 8 people to whom in her heyday she was a favourite passenger steamer, more at Auckland, Lyttelton and Dunedin than at Wellington. Correspondents to the newspapws and to the owners of the ship have urged every endeavour should be made to find some use for the hull, possibly as a breakwater at a coastal port, while some have even gone to the length of protesting against the company being allowed to sink- thb ship. The Union Company has considered the proposals put forward, and it is only because they have been deemed impracticable that it has been decided to scuttle the ship.
