McTiernan to the High Court judiciary by the Federal Ministry is causing considerable controversy. ' The committee of the Bar of Victoria has declared such appointments raise the gravest apprehension for the future administration of justice. “Public confidence can be secured only by the appointment of men of the highest legal attainments, independence and character irrespective of political views,” the committee states. “If judicial appointments are to be regarded as political rewards or opportunities for political service public confidence in the honest administration of ‘justice must inevitably be seriously threatened.”
