METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Last Tuesday evening at the parish Hall the anniversary of. the Methodist Sunday School was celebrated by a tea party and a concert later in the evening. On the previous Sunday anniversary services were. held at the ■ Methodist Church, when the morning service was taken bv the Rev. E. S. Emmett, Hawera, and the Rev. P. J. C’ossum took the evening service, both giving interesting addresses to the children. Tuesday evening’s function was arranged by the Sunday School teaching staff—Mesdkines Tonkin and Davies, Miss Myra Harding, Mr. Davies and Miss Myrtle Kvans (organist), who were a6listed by some of . the senior girls. Mr. N. C. Davies presented the annual report and statement of accounts, which showed a more satisfactory state of finance than that which existed at this period, last vear. Mr. Davies also expressed thanks to the parents for the interest taken throughout the year He added that, the building of the new Sunday school was being kept steadily in view, but it would be necessary to wait until more prosperous tiipes before the scheme cbuld be finalised. Prizes were distributed by Mr. Cossum, who tendered thanks to the teachers for" the splendid work they had accomplished throughout the year*.he also expressed thanks to all those .who had assisted in the evening’s function. The musical programme was provided entirely by the pupils, and the fol-' lowino- numbers were given: Piano solo, Linda°Davies; recitation, Roy Dawson; day school chorus, infants; recitations, Jessie and Mabel Williams; piano solo, Dennis Cook; recitation, . Ella Guy; piano duet, Bonnie Tonkin and Linda Davies; recitation, Ken Catchpole; recitation, Florence Harding; double piano duet, Bonnie Tonkin, Linda Davies, Marjery Cook and Pat Tonkin; recitations, Gwen Myhill and Elsie Tattersail. BOY SCOUTS. The monthly meeting of the group committee of the Boy Scouts! was held on Friday evening. Present: Messrs. A. E. Anderson (in the chair), F. Albon, C. H. Brewer, j. Tattersall, R. Gwyn’ (scoutmaster), .L. Brewer (assistant scoutmaster), K. Albon (cubmhster), and 0. A. Corder (secretary). The Scoutmaster reported that it had not been found possible tor the troop to be represented at the Wanganui jamboree. . ' . , ... Matters in connection with the visit of the Chief Scout, Lord Baden-Powell, were further discussed. The rally 'at Wellington will be held on February 28, and it is expected that a good number of local scouts will make the trip to meet the Chief Scout. , The scoutmaster reported upon the general progress, and conduct of the scouts during the year. Some discussion ensued with regard to a system of reporting upon scouts’ work, with a view to bringing the scoutmaster, committee and parents into closer co-operation. It was subsequently decided that the question of reports should be fully dealt with on the last Friday in January. RED CROSS SOCIETY. A social evening under the auspices of the Kaponga branch of the Red Cross Society, home nursing section, was held at the residence of Mrs. J. Guy on Thursday. Songs Were contributed by Miss Maud Maud, Miss Myrtle Evans and the Rev. P. J. Cofisum, Mrs. Evhns being at the piano. An interesting competition was won by Miss Maxwell. Mr. Oossiini, :in- his capacity of president of the local branch, of the . Red Cross Society, presented the certificates won. by candidates at the recent, examinations as follows: intermediate, Mesdames Guthrie and Brewer, Misses Jean Guy and B. Cossuni; elementary, Miss Jean Dempsey (Rowan), Misses Irene Brewer and I. Melville, Mrs. ,W. -Lind (Awatuna), and Miss Shepherd (Opunake). Sister Inglis, bn behalf of the Kaponga branch, presented the two models, Creina Guthrie and June Thurston, with a large Christmas bonbon each. ..' • . GENERAL. Tenders for the alterations to the • town hall, necessary as a result of _ the forthcoming installation of “talkies,” closed on Wednesday and that of Mr. W. Melville was accepted. Mrs. E. Butler, Wanganui, after spending a holiday with her daughter, Mrs. Alex. Melville, has left f° r Hawera.; • On Friday evening at the Parish Hall the-children attending' St. Mark’s Anglican. Sunday . school held. their annual tea and prize-giving ceremony. Tea was provided by a committee comprising Mesdaqies E. Boyle, A.-Burt and A. W. Anderson, Misses I. Melville arid A. Maxwell. The vicar, the Rev. A. J. Farnell, distributed the prizes and spoke of the good work done by the teachers, Mies I. Melville and Mr. J. Bailie mentioning that since the departure of Mr. Bailie from the district Miss Melville had had the whole Sunday school to manage herself.
