DURHAM ROAD SCHOOL
, FAREWELL TO THE TEACHER. The annual breaking-up of the Durham school took the form of an afternoon spofts and presentation of prizes. The function was attended by a large number of parents and ex-pupils. At the, conclusion of the sports programme, the chairman, Mr. A. J. Borland, presented, the prizes. Proficiency certificates were issued to Peter A. Davidson and Reginald F. Schemanski. Fifteen good attendance certificates were issued. The chairman remarked that this was the second certificate issued to Joyce McEwen, she not having missed once since , she commenced school two. years ago, probably a record for so young a child who has a mile and a-half to walk to school.
Each child, including those present under school age, received a gift. Each also received a box of chocolates from Miss James. Special prizes for the cleanest and tidiest desk, donated by Messrs. J. .Shield and A. Dodunski, were won by Reg Schemanski and Alma Corney. Miss James’ special prize for best chart in connection with calf-rearing will be awarded when results, are known. The teacher, Miss James, who is leaving the; school on transfer to Waitui after seven years at Durham, was presented on behalf of the residents with a leather writing case. The chairman said it was most regrettable to say goodbye to a teacher, and especially so when the teacher had won the love and respect of the children as Miss James had. Miss James thanked the chairman and those present and said she felt she was receiving tho present under false pretences as she was not actually leaving the Inglewood district. On behalf of the pupils Peter Davidson also presented her with a leather attache case.;;.;
