CARRINGTON SCHOOL
ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING CONCERT.- *' J ? J ' The Hurwprth hall Was packed on Thursday night for the school children’s concert. The school committee had erected a stage, which was. decorated with red and blue back scenes (made by one of the members, Mr. Stan. Lovegrove), and curtains lent by the Frankley Road people. Mr. Percy White, ; a member of the Education Board, presented each child with a book.. He complimented the district, on having two such good teachers 1 as Miss Anthony and Miss Kurth. Miss Anthony had not had one failure in any pupil she had entered for the proficiency examination since she had taken charge of the Carrington school. Mr. White'presented the proficiency -certificates and prizes, for calf-rearing and home gardening competitions. Mr. V. Baird, chairman of the. school committee, announced each item of the long, programme. - Miss Kurth, assistant, mistress, was pianiste. There was a great rush for the souvenir programmes at 6d. each, which were the hand-work of.the teachers; all were sold long before the concert began.' Mr. Baird returned thanks
on behalf of Miss Anthony to Mrs. Baird) Mrs, Burkett,- Mrs. King and Mrs, Pepperill for their assistance in ' making the - costumes,; to the Erankley Road people for, the loan, of stage curtains, and to others, who had helped. At the conclusion of the concert supper was served and dancing enjoyed to music supplied by Mrs. King, Misses Gilbert and . King (piano) ;and Mr. B. Shaw (cornet). ’. • - >/. Shaw; .song, .the school; recitation, Ola Baird; Maori songs,, seniors; recitation, Phyllis Robertson;; song, the school; recitation, Horton Baird; dialogue, seniors; farewell, song, the school.
proficiency certificates were-gained by Nona Adlam, Nancy Harper and Reece Gilbert. Prizes ; were awarded for- the home garden competition: lan Okey, 90 marks 1; Sid Okey,. 89 marks, 2; Nona Adlam,. 80 marks, 3; Ron? Adlam, 79 marks,. 4. The calf-rearing competition was won by Roy King for best in dairyr type and condition and Donald Gley© and Phyllis Gley© tied for second place.
