CO-OPERATION ESSENTIAL

DAIRY RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS.

HAWERA AND MASSEY COLLEGE,

The importance of co-operation in 'dairy research was stressed by Mr. P. O. iVcale in his report to the Federation of Taranaki Co-operative Dairy Companies yesterday. Co-operation was proceeding between the Hawera laboratory and the New. Zealand Dairy Research Institute at Massey College, Mr. Veale said. Last sei. -11 reports had been furnished to the central institution upon the new method of standardisation and the economics of standardisation. Additional matters investigated and reported up had been: — (il) Further correlation and comparative standards for microscopic and rediictase methods of milk grading; (2) milk preservatives; (3) bacillus acidophilus in starter cultures; (4) modes of pressing of cheese arid different styles of prepara, tion of curd for pressing. It was essential that there should be full co-operation between the various organisations repsonsible for dairy research in New Zealand. It was particularly essential that in times of stress and depression such as the present they should continue investigating the faults and striving after improved quality. Hard times and low prices were going to hit many foreign competitors more seriously than the advantageously placed New Zealand farmer. When the ordeal was over and the weakest had gone, to the wall wider markets and choicer avenues of sale would be made available for New Zealand butter and cheese. It was for them to see that they emerged from the difficult times ahead improved in every phase of quality and fit to capture and to hold against all competition the larger and better class markets which would be thrown open to them.
