SECOND HAWERA ALLOCATION

£ 5 O UNEMPLOYMENT SUBSIDY. MEN DOING GOOD WORK. A second allocation of £56 for the Hawera district under the No. 2 unemployment relief scheme has been made by the Unemployment Board, according to advice received in Hawera yesterday. The first £5O is practically expended. The South Taranaki committee commenced operations exactly a week ago and sine© then 46 men have been found work for 168 man-days, or an average 8C nearly four days each. The cost in subsidies has been £47. In some cases men have been employed through the committee arid the employers have paid all the wages. The total number registered as unemployed in Hawera is 58. A feature has been the excellent report furnished by employers. In every case they Have been completely satisfied with the men. In one instance an employer estimated that a job would take a week but the unemployed man whom he secured completed it in four days. CHRISTMAS MUSIC AT CHURCHES. SPECIAL SERVICES IN HAWERA.

Appropriate Christmas music was rendered at three Hawera churches on Sunday, the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist. In. place of the usual psalms apd canticles at. St. Mary’s several wcllknOwn carols were sung, followed by the anthem, “The Hebrew Chorale,” from the cantata “New’born King.” Miss Biggs' sang the solo. The lovely contralto solo, “O Thou that Tellest,” and the great. tenor recitative, “Comfort Ye.” wero well 1 sting by Mrs. T. Sunderland and Mr. A. E. Morris respectively, and Miss Miller sang the song “How Lovely Are the Messengers” (Liddle). Then followed tho z chorus from . the \ Messiah, "And the Glory,’’ by the choir. Mr. Herbert Webb was organist. At the Methodist Church the choir sang a Christmas anthem and then the choruses from the “Messiah,” "And the Glory,” ‘‘Lift Up Your Heads,” and the “Hallelujah.” Miss ■ W. Mills sang the aria “Arise, Shine,” and Mr. H. Ackroyd the solo “Why Do the Nations?” An address was given by the Rev. E. S. Emmitt on the question, "What Is the Glory of the Lord ?!’ Mrs. Shepherd was organist and Mr. H. C. A. Fox conductor.

A large congregation attended the Hawera Presbyterian Church when the sacred cantata “Bethlehem’’ was presented by the combined Senior and junior choirs numbering 4S voices. Priot to the performance th© Rev. R. E. Evans preached an appropriate sermon On the subject of the Nativity. The singing of tho choirs was considered. to ’be exceptionally meritorious, th© Solos also being of a very high standard. The soloists were Misses E. Murdoch, M. Sunderland, Messrs Green, W. Victory by 57 points was gained by a Hawera territorial scooting team in a match, against the Legion of Frontiersmen at Hawera last night. In two events, seven rounds application and ten rounds rapid, the territorials made 500 and the Legion 449. For the Legion Sergeant A. Mather secured the highest score with 78, and Corporal R. Evans with 83 led the territorial team. * CHRISTMAS SOCIAL EVENING. Legionaries of the Hawera troop of Frontiersmen . held a Christmas social evening on Saturday, about .25 members attending. A short toast list'consisting of .toasts to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Legion and Sergeant A. Mather was honoured. Songs , were sung by Lieutenant A. E. Stevens, Sergeant-R, Johns, Corporal E. Fiper and Troopers H. Briggs, W. Barleyman, J. C. Findlater and G. Quayle. A mock court-martial was staged, Sergeant Mather acting as president. SWIMMING CLUB ACTIVITIES. A meeting of the committee of the Hawera Swimming Club was held last night, Mr. 0. V. Church presiding. Tfie Borough Council notified its grant to the club of the use of the baths on two evenings each week. Mr. B. Ryan reported that the Lyall Bay Surf Club had made a suggestion that if tlje Hawera Club could guar-' antes 40 per cent, of the gross takings it would be prepared to compete in a carnival after the New Zealand swimming championship at Wanganui. The visiting team would give demonstrations of swimming and life-saving both at the baths and at the beach. The club members did not propose to swim for trophies, though they would compete in all events. The secretary was instructed to advise the Lyall Bay Club that the Hawera club would consider the proposal but desired further particulars. The captain and vice-captain, were appointed to divide the club into two teams for club nights. The pext club night will be January 5,
