A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr. C. The annual primary school examination for proficiency certificates was held at, Hawera yesterday, standard 6 pupils from other schools in the district congregating at; the Main School. The examination was supervised by Inspector, J. A. Henry. Though not fortunate enough to secure a prize a Hawera resident participated in t'he recent Irish sweepstake. The circular sent to him with his ticket is rather interesting as it features photographs of counterfoils or tickets purchased by Viscount Craigavon, Count McCormack (the famous -singer),^Lord Burghley,' Mr. , Cosgrave, the Earl of Granard and His Excellency the Gov-ernor-General of t'he Irish Free ''fate. Press ‘ opinions from leading English and Irish journals together 1 with an explanation of the purposes of the sweep, to assist hospital funds, complete the circular. The Hawera resident also received a reproduction of the cable sent by Mr. James Walker, Governor of New York State; U.S.A., for his ticket, in which he stated: “Honoured and gratified to be subscriber to Irish Hospital Sweepstake.” Superimposed upon the reproduction is a photograph of his 5 counterfoil. In connection with Mr. ticket it is interesting to note that he opposed the Bill legalising the sweep when it came before the Dail. Messrs It. P. Morrissey and Co. advertise particulars of their usual mart sales to-day ’fit 11 a.m. and 1.1'5 p.m. at the Union Street salerooms, Hawera. J. C. Smith advertises particulars of his mart sales for to-day, commencing at 1.30 p.m. and at 2 p.m., the latter a special sale of musical instruments on behalf of various vendors. Furniture and new seagrass goods suitable for Christmas gifts will be offered first. HAWERA LOYAL UNION LODGE. INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS. The installation of ofiiteers for the next six months was made at a meeting of the Loyal Union Lodge, Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, > Hawera, on Tuesday night, N.G. Bro. OPERA HOUSE, HAWERA. ‘'ABIE’S IRISH ROSE.” Anne Nichole’ famous stage play, “Abie’s Irish Rose,” has been “ansplanted to the screen by Paramount, and equipped yvifh quality sound, featuring four important sequences with talking. A beautiful musical score has been prepared for the picture by J. 8. Zamecnik. The picture opens at the Opera House, Hawera, to-day at 2 p.m., for two nights and one matinee only. Charles “Buddy” Rogers, Nancy Carroll, Jean Herscholt, and J. Farrell MacDonald carry the important roles with a superb supporting cast also featuring Ida Kramer and Bernard Gorcey Who appeared in the original stage show in its remarkable run of five and onehalf years in New York. “Abie’r Irish Rose” is not a farce comedy, nor is it a heavy drama. It is a cross between the two, a cross section of life itself, told in a series of dramatic scenes, to. which a touch of corned, lightne?- has been added occasionally. The four talking sequences fire features of the production that will long be remembered. •Nancy Carroll’s singing and dancing, with “Buddy” Rogers at the piano, is one of the highlights of the production. Jean Herscholt, in an intense dramatic sequence, will startle on with his emotional acting. ’Phone 2713 for reserves.
