BY-ELECTION FOR TOWN BOARD. . SPORTS BODIES’ ACTIVITIES. - The' result of the by-election to fill the vacancy on the Kaponga Town Board caused by the death of Mr, A. J.. Herbert was: W. Marr 62; J. A. lyach 45; Informal 1. The weather could hardly have been more inviting on Thursday afternoon, when the opening of the Kaponga Ladies’ CTorjuet Club season took pllace. There was a. large attendance of visitors and members. Clubs represented were Okaiawa, Park, (Hawera), Kia. Ora (Hawera), Eltham and Manaia. the president of the Kaponga Club MrsC. 1.1. Brewer, extended a welcome to the visitors. .French croquet was won by Airs. 1. Evans, golf croquet by Mrs. R. E. Willianis, Peg hitting by Mrs. H- Collier (Hawera. Park), ding the bell by Mrs. Williams (Okaiawa) and hurry scurry bv Mesdames Penny- and Johnstone (Okaiawa). Afternoon tea was
served. _ „ A general meeting of the KapongaBowlin* Club was held at the residence pf the secretary, Mr. J. H. Tyacb, when air.' A. V. Tait presided over a good attendance. Sympathy was expressed with the relatives of the late caretaker, Mr A. J. Herbert. Mr, A. Melville, who said he had known Mr. Herbert for 30 years, paid a tribute to his work for the club.. Opening day. was fixed wr October 30. The president was appointed the club’s representative on the western division. The meeting discussed whether the'club should enter two or four rinks during the coming seasoil in the western division banner matches. The committee was empowered to make a decision before delegates of the clubs would meet at Opunake next week. The dance and euchre party in the Town Hall on Thursday night under the auspices of the third grade team of the Kaponga Football Club was veiy successful. It was attended by about 50 couples. Marsh’s orcliestia supplied the music and Messrs. I. Alty and L. West were masters of ceremonies. Durin* the supper interval music was played 3 by Miss Myrtle Evans and Mr T. Nuku In the euchre tournament, which was supervised by Mr. C. W. Blackwell, 20 plavers competed. Mrs. J. A. Dawson and Master Pat O’Donogllue won the prizes. Supper arrangements were made by Mrs. J. E. Fever, who was assisted by. Mesdames J. A. Dawson, J. Tattersail, A. Cameron, D. Frost and Miss E. Fever. The president of the Kaponga Football Club, Mr. ,D. P. FMalone, presented to the captain of the team, Mr, Brian Bradford, the Drysdale Cup which as winner of the southern third grade division, the team would hold for twelve months. In the final game with Star (New Plymouth), Kaponga had been somewhat at a disadvantage but had given a good display although beaten. 1 . ■ ,
