BRIEF CAREER ENDED.

To remove a potential danger to the naval ammunition depot at Spectacle Island, the wooden hulk Birriwa was ■burned at Sydney recently. The decision to destroy the hulk came as the result of a number ;of fires which had lately broken out- oil board, and. which, were believed to be the work of- mischievous Boys. With the yvind in a certain direction it was felt -that a fire on the • hulk, might spread to the ammunition depot with serious consequences. Ten wooden ships were ordered by the Hughes Government as a war-time emergency. Five were completed during 1918 and 1919, and sold soon afterwards to an American company. They reverted to the Federal Government early in 1920 through a default in payments by the purchasers. They were then used for a time under charter by private companies. In 1922 the vessels were purchased by the New South Wales Shipping Company for £2OOO each. - The company removed all valuable fittings and sold them. It was intended to destroy all the hulks, and the Bellata and Bundarra were burned in the Parramatta River, near Kissing Point, in October and' November, 1926. The Birriwa was moored near Spectacle Island, and the Bethanga and Berringa in Iron Cove. The vessels gradually settled down in the mud and were forgotten until the Navy recently discovered the danger latent in the presence of the Birriwa, which had become a playground for boys. It is probable that the Harbour Trust will, lake steps to dispose of the Bethanga and Berringa in a similar manner.
