One of Sydney’s leading surgeons, Sir Alexander MacCormick, K.C.M.G., M.D., has been appointed a director of the Bank of New South Wales, _ to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Air. James Burns. The appointment of Messrs W.. D. Hunt, T. A. Duncan and A. Hamilton to the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board is announced, according to a Press Association telegram from Wellington, in the Gazette issued last night. Air. and Airs. W. D. Gordon (Wellington), Mr. W. Shaw (Auckland), All. A. Toogood (Wellington), Mr. A. W. AlcGregor (Nelson) and Air. H. Judd (Cambridge) are among the guests at th© Criterion, New Plymouth. Air. Train, stationmaster at Waitotara, has received notice of transfer to Wanganui, on the relief staff as, owing to a° falling off -in revenue and the economy measures, it has been decided to close Waitotara as an officered station. The death of Air. John Ernest Staples is announced, in a Press Association telegram from Wellington. Mr. Staples, who was 64 years of age, was a wellknown chemist. He was born at Nelson and lived practically all his life at Wellington. The Public Service Appeal Board commences a several dayft’ sitting in New Plymouth to-day. The members, who arrived by the mail train on Wednesday evening are: Colonel J. J. Esson, C.AI.G. (chairman), Alessrs C. de R. Andrews, J. H. Jerram and A. S. Houston. With them is Mr. T. Mark, secretary to the Public Service Commissioner. The Hon. T. Shailer Weston, AI.L.C., has been invited to take part in the international parliamentary commercial conference to be held in Brussels. It will open on September 7, and it is expected that about 25 delegates from the British Parliament will be present. Afeanwhile, Air. Weston has left London to join Airs. Weston in Scotland. They will be in the north during most of August.
