DAMAGE BY EARTHQUAKE

A NATIONAL RESPONSIBILITY. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Christchurch, Last Night. “That in the opinion of this conference the earthquake damage to West Coast highways should be regarded as a national calamity and repairs should be borne by the Consolidated Fund.” This resolution was carried unanimously at a conference of county councils and the Canterbury Automobile Association, held to-day. Several speakers protested that it was unreasonable that the South Island construction programme should be held up because the available funds in control of the Main Highways Board were being used to restore the West Coast roads damaged by the earthquake.
