Boyd, of Wellington, is staying in New Plymouth. * Of * * The engagement is announced of Catherine Doris, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Slinger, of Mangorei Road, to Victor John, second son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Upshall, of Christchurch, Hants, England. A * * * The death has occurred of Mrs. J. Knight, widow of the late Mr. James Knight, and a well-known resident of the Lower Hutt district, in her 87th year. Mrs. Knight, whose maiden name was Heayncs, came to New Zealand with her parents in the sailing ship Hastings in 1856. Except for 12 years which she spent in Taranaki, she had resided ever since in the Lower Hutt district, where she was well-known as an ardent supporter of the Methodist Church. She is survived by seven sons and two daughters. * * * * At the Kia Ora Coquet Club's lawns at Hawera <n Wednesday of last week Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Morris won the Dingle buttons from Mrs. Strange and Mrs. Cropton. The challengers, Mrs. McKay and Mrs. Milroy, won the Kia Ora ferns from Mrs. Leslie Bull and Mrs. Milroy on Thursday, and the Dowling buttons were won from Miss HayMackenzie and Mrs. W. G. C. Sutherland, Manaia. Mrs. Nairn lived at Manaia many years ago, her father being one of the first settlers to take up land on Sutherland Road.
