DISTRICT NEWS

MATA-U. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Public Works men gave a social and dance in the local hall last Thursday. Unfortunately the night was extremely wet and cold. However quite a large crowd attended, visitors being present from Purangi, Poliokura and Kiore. Mr. S. Edgecombe (our local surfaceman) and his.wife acted as organisers. There was an orchestra of five instruments and the dancers quite enjoyed the music. During the evening several solos and community songs were given. A waltzing competition was won by Mr.' Leslie Chapman and Mrs. S. Edgecombe., A very dainty supper was served, Mesdames S. Edgecombe, E. Evans, J. Moody and K. Mumby having charge of the arrangements.. _ - Tho widening and grading of the KioreMatau saddle is now almost completed, and the camps are being struck. We will miss the canvas town, which was very picturesque and cheerful among the fern trees on the big hill. A ladies’ ball, in aid of hall improvements, is to be held shortly. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Nelson, after residing here for a number of years, have left the district. For some years Mr. Nelson was our local schoolmaster, and whilst under his charge, the school won many of the agricultural competitions including tho Fisch Shield. He was also responsible for the laying out of the school grounds, which are among the finest in Taranaki. We sincerely hope that Mr. Nelson’s health, which has not been good for some time, will benefit by tho change. 'As the.bidibidi is ripening fast farmers are trying hard to get their sheep shorn before, the seeds get nto the wool. The roads are drying up fast, though tho Kiore-Matau new formation is yet too soft for much car traffic, Mrs. Moss and Miss R. Evans, of Christchurch, are the guests of Mrs. E. Evans.’

Mrs. Hammond-Williams, loondon, is tho guest of Mrs. H. Larsen. Messrs. C. H. and R. A. Larsen spent last week-end with their parents.
