RESTORATION OF HIGHWAY

PROGRESS IS BULLER GORGE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Inquiries made as to the position of the restoration of earthquake damage in the Buller Gorge on the main highway between Nelson and Westport elicited the information that the Mail Highways Board has 260 men employed on this road. A member of the board who recently inspected the road was able to travel from the western tide as far as Lyell by car, and from the eastern side as far as Newton Fia*. so that there is now only about 12 miles of the road not -negotiable by car. . The Main Highways Board has every hope that ’ before next winter the road will be negotiable for traffic although, of course, it will be some time before it can be brought back to the state of excellence and stability that existed before the earthquake.
