‘WIRED WIRELESS’ BEGINS

INAUGURATION ON THURSDAY UNIQUE CEREMONY FOR OPENING. CONFERENCE HELD BY ’PHONE. (By Wire —Special to News.)Auckland, Last Night. Carrier current telephony, or “wired wireless,” will be formally inaugurated in New Zealand at 11 o’clock on Thursday morning, when the PostmasterGeneral, the Hon. J. B. Donald, will meet the mayors of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and chairmen of chambers, of commerce in those cities at a. “conference” conducted entirely by telephone from Wellington. The Minister will make the opening speech, which will be audible in the three other centres simultaneously. Afterwards mayors and chairmen will be i. ited to speak, and the ren. •ks of each will be heard by the Minister and all the others. The Auckland end of the conference will be in the Wellesley Street automatic telephone exchange. Similar opening ceremonies have been held in the past, a notable one being when the new Cook Strait' telephone cable was brought into use a year or two ago. However, none has been concerned. 0 with “wired” wireless, or has embraced such a large part of the Dominion. Carrier current telephony is already in regular use between Auckland and Hamilton and connections have been made by this means between Hamilton and Palmerston North and between Wellington and Christchurch. Ultimately all the' main telephone lines of New Zealand will make use of the system. Ordinary Ipng-distance telephony has already been brought to a high standard of performance by the engineers of the Post and Telegraph Department by the use of “wired wireless.” More messages than before can be carried* on one pair Of wires, and the quality and the volume of the transmission over great distances are much improved. As with the latest systems of ordinary telephony, valve ’ amplifiers are introduced at intervals along the line, with the result that speech is transmitted strongly and clearly for • hundreds and even thousands of miles.
