EAST END RESERVE CONTROL

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.

SUCCESSFUL YEAR’S OPERATIONS.

There was a good attendance ( at the annual meeting of the East End Reserve last night, Mr. A. R. Milne presiding. The balance-sheet shorved that the receipts for the year had been £746~3s 10s, while the expenditure had been £739 8s 4d, leaving a credit balance over a heavy year’s operations of £6 15s 6d. The annual report presented by Mr. Milne acknowledged indebtedness to the assistant town clerk, Mr. G. V. Matthews, in the able manner he had presented the statement and audited the books. Notwithstanding the favourable bathing season experienced last year, the takings had considerably increased. The reserve had again been very favourably commented on by the various schools from North and South Taranaki holding their annual picnics, and by large numbers of visitors from all over the Dominion. The committee was pleased to welcome the re-formed East End Surf Club. Having them in the midst -would give confidence to the bathers and their help would always be available. The small portion of the protective wall on the sea front that had been constructed last year had proved very effective in saving the pavilion from the most violent gale which set in from the north-east and which showed beyond doubt that the completion of this wall should be the one endeavour’ of the new committee. It was hoped in the near* future to receive some benefit from the Newton King legacy to continue this class of work. Thanks were due to the borough engineer, Mr. C. Clarke, for plans and supervision, and to the Borough Council for advancing a loan. The tennis courts and bathing sheds were still in great demand. The recently formed residential flats in the' pavilion for the summer months had justified tho committee’s action in establishing them. Visitors came from as far afield as Palmerston North, Tangarakau and surrounding districts.

Thanks were du© to Mr. J. S. Lister, general manager of tho shop, to Mr. T. G. Sole, secretary, treasurer and grounds oversjer, for the very 'able manner in which ho had carried out his various duties, to the caretaker, Mr. E. Burkitt, for his constant car© and zeal shown in tho general works, more particularly in carrying out the erection of the concrete retaining wall, to Mrs. Burkitt, as assistant caretaker, and to all who had assisted in the various functions held during the year. The following are the committee: Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. (borough representative), Messrs. A. R. Milne, V. Milne, F. Morris, H. V. Sharrock, J. S. Lister, F. Nicholson, F. Eaddy, A. Paynter,. W. A. Brown, J. Mylroi, C. Abbott, P. A. Draper, G. Pascoe, F. A. Coleman, C. G. Clarke, H. Bulmer, J. H. Shcat and C. B. Martin.

The meeting passed votes of thanks to Messrs. Matthews and Burkitt. It was a recommendation from the meeting that the committee finish the work on the retaining wall, which had showed itself necessary to protect the pavilion and foreshore from erosion.

The committee was congratulated upon the permanent work they had carried out during tho year.

Mr. J. S. Lister (superintendent) presented a report and balance-sheet of the shop. Mrs. Martin advised that there was a necessity for a permanent ladies’ committee and the formation of such a body was referred to the committee with favourable comment. The ladies are to be called together at an early date. The secretary was voted the same honorarium as last year. It was resolved to send a letter of sympathy to Mr. C. Warren, the late deputy-chairman, who is at present in hospital.

Votes of thanks were passed to all who had assisted during the year and to the Press.

At a subsequent committee meeting Mr. A. R. Milne was re-elected chairman and Mr. F. Morris deputy-chair-man. Mr. T. G. Solo was again elected secretary, treasurer and grounds overseer.

It was decided to advertise the fiats at the reserve during the summer months.

In his review of the balance-sheet, Mr. 0. D. Matthews, the auditor, congratulated the committee on the excellent work done during the year. The accounts were in a healthy state. The building committee was authorised to go on with the alterations and additions to the shop up to the estimated cost of £5O, a number of the members volunteering assistance. Regarding the official canvasser for donations for the reserve, Mr. Brown is to be asked to accept the position. It was decided to hold the next committee meeting on September 10, and the subsequent meetings every alternate Monday,
