ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

DUFF CUP COMPETITION CALEDONIANS AND ALBION DRAW BRIGHT WESTERN PARK MATCH.

Further matches in the Duff Cup competition were played by senior Association football teams in New on Saturday. Rain fell intermittently and as a result of the heavy showers recently the grounds were slippery. The results were: — Caledonians 2 v. Albion 2.

Rangers 2 v. Pirates 1. Probably the fastest and brightest exhibition of the code was the match at Western Park, in which Caledonians drew with Albion, two goals each. Forcing a corner within a few seconds of the kick-off by Albion, Caledonians could not convert their advantage into points, for Brown cleared and allowed Ibbotson to kick for safety. Albion obtained a penalty from which the ball went to Beemer and to Smith, who rushed to the Albion end, but his shot when wide, Ibbotson tiaiisfeiied play to Caledonians’ goal, Campbell’s shot going out. Gardner took a i°ng shot but sent over the goal line. From the goal kick a corner to Caledonians wag °put behind. Walbran, when well placed, shot over the bar. Albion maintained the pressure until Quay relieved. Fawcett sent his men forward, Ibbotson saving the situation. Caledonians came through again and forced a corner off Crowe, which was headed out by Spedding. Caledonians got through, but offside play spoilt their chance. Coming again, Quay pushed out to Griffin, who rushed through to beat Neighbour, putting Caledonians one up. Campbell, Brown and Walbran were associated in a forward movement for Albion, but the Caledonian backs broke up the attack, and Bell forced a line ball. Thompson, Griffin and Hill were prominent in a Caledonian attack, but another infringement spoilt their chance and Albion got away, forcing a corner, which was placed beautifully by Ibbitson for Walbran to head through and equalise the scores. Bremer had to retire temporarily owing to an injury. Griffin went through for Caledonians, but the ball went out of play and half-time came with the scores still one all. After the change-over Smith sent to Griffin, whose shot Neighbour had to punch out and the goal was denied. Griffin was off-side when in a good position to obtain another point. Play was very keen when Caledonians obtained a penalty kick. This was cleared by Albion, who obtained a resultless corner. A second advantage of the same kind was put behind by Fokard. Then Caledonians rushed through and Neighbour saved at the expense of a corner. Smith found himself well placed, but his shot was caught by Neighbour. Hill passed to Gardner, whose shot went over the bar. Spedding centred well into Caledonians’ goal, but no player was there to take advantage of the opening, and Henderson cleared. Ellicot pushed across, bringing Ranson out of goal to clear, and Thomson got Caledonians moving, but off-side again spoilt their chance and the ball was hustled to Caledonians’ end for Bell to clear. Henderson centred well, bringing Neighbour out to clear from Griffin, and some fast and exciting exchanges were witnessed, both sides striving hard for the lead. Henderson partially cleared from Caledonians’ goal, but the greasy ball doubled back for Walbran to get in his shot, putting Albion in the lead. From the kick-off Caledonians forced the pace and Smith went through with Bremer, whose shot brought Neighbour out to clear. Campbell, at the other end. essayed a long shot that went wide. Ashton broke up 11 combined Caledonian attack. Numerous line balls in Albions’ half gave Hill a chance, 'but his shot went over the bar. Brown and Ibbotson forced a corner that was put right into ‘.Caledonians’ goal, but Ranson cleared. Griffin, Hill and Gardner rushed down, Griffin shooting. Neighbour saved and Gardner, getting the re-bound, equalised the scores. Bremer went downfield from the centre kick, and a goal kick to Albion resulted. Albion worked down the field, but were sent back by Thomson and Hill. Off-side again spoilt a good opening. There was no further score and the match ended: — Caledonians 2 Albion 2 Mr. G. Lawrence refereed. RANGERS TOO GOOD FOR PIRATES. VICTORY BY ODD GOAL OF THREE HARD GAME PLAYED AT FITZROY. A hard but not very brilliant game was witnessed at Fitzroy between Rangers and Pirates, the former winning by the odd goal in three. Previous rain had not left the ground in a very good state and the ball was soon heavy and greasy. Both teams were two men short and played with a depleted forward line, which was not conducive to spectacular passing, though the halves combined in the front line on several occasions. Rangers deserved their win as they were the better team on the day, but some determined efforts to improve their position were made by their opponents, who were decidedly unlucky not to score more than their single goal in the concluding stages of each spell. Rangers were hard on the ball from the kick-off, Gibson intercepting a pass and setting his forwards going. After James had cleared Rangers obtained a fruitless corner in the net sally and Randell missed a shot. Pirates took a turn at attacking but were stemmed by Oliver, whose kick to Randell allowed him to get away and score with a fast grubber° shot that left Perry-Keene standing. The ball was being carried Up and clown the field in repeated onslaughts by both sides, with Rangers in the ascendancy, but White’s shot went wide and Thomson was off-side when a good chance was offering. Pirates indulged in some smart passing, but Rangers’ defence held and they forced play to the other end, where from a corner Dalziel found the net for their second goal. Perry-Keene was sound the next time he was tested, by Randell. Pirates had the better of the rest of the spell and were unlucky not to score when • McKay overran the ball in an open goal after Shepherd had failed to clear a shot from Anderson. A penalty kick taken by Anderson found Shepherd in the way and Boyle miskicked when Shepherd had been drawn out of the goal, "which was wW- open. Rangers

were still two goals up at the interval. Perry-Keene saved well from a shot by W. Thomson and Randell kicked wide at t'he opening of the second spell until Pirates combined in a rush which called Shepherd out of goal. McKay was soon back with, the ball but missed the goal. Pirates were failing to round off their attacks or they might have scored more than once. After a corner had proved resultless their efforts were rewarded by a goal from the boot of J. Anderson, but Rangers were back hammering at their goal from the kickoff. Both W. Thomson and Randell failed to find the net and Pirates carried play to their opponents’ half in a vain endeavour to equalise the score. Oliver, the full-back, and the goalie were sound, Shepherd once rushing out to take the ball off the very toe of McKay as he was about to shoot. He made another good save when he slinped in stopping a hot one . from Anderson and just managed to scoop the ball away from McKay’s feet. Rangers had the better of the last few minutes of the game, Peery-Keene saving well from Randell before the match ended in the score: Rangers 2 Pirates 1 Mr. R. L. Lowe was referee.
