BASKETBALL FINALS

INGLEWOOD SUPERIOR SENIORS.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS FINISH EVEN.

Basketball competitions in both senior and primary grades were finalised on Saturday, when Inglewood (winners of the southern division) comfortably defeated West End Red (winners of the northern division) by the big margin of 22 to nine. The primary schools’ final on the previous Saturday was much more keenly contested, Inglewood (last year’s winners) drawing with Vogeltown, the northern division winners.

The Taranaki championship final was played at the Coronation Hall, owing to the" bad weather. Almost immediately Inglewood asserted their superiority and at half-time they were in an unassailable position. Their superior knowledge of the game and various tactics enabled them to pile up 15 points to four. West End Reds combined better in the second half, and the game was much more even. Inglewood, however, were consistent, and scored seven more goals to their opponents’ four, the game ending with the scores: Inglewood 22. West End Reds 9. Miss Valentine was the referee.

After the match the Taranaki representatives, who leave for Christchurch on August 26, indulged in a practice game in an endeavour to gain some combination.

On behalf of Mrs. Sutherland, the donor of the Sutherland Cup, who was unavoidably absent, Miss Tarry presented the coveted trophy to the captain of the Inglewood team.

INGLEWOOD AND VOGELTOWN TIE.

The primary schools’ competition was finalised when Inglewood and Vogeltown met on the Baptist grounds. Occasional light showers and the wet ground made the ball very slippery and on both sides promising movements were nullified by inaccurate throwing. In spite of the adverse conditions some really fine concerted play was witnessed and when the final whistle was sounded the scores, gave a true indication of the trend of play. Inglewood were first to get going, but towards the end of the first half Vogeltown were playing better and the score at the spell was five to three in favour of the visitors. Vogeltown adopted different tactics early in the second spell and, taking advantage of their taller attacking girls, rattled up two goals in quick succession to equalise the scores. From that stage the game became interesting. Inglewood, stung by this reverse, infused added vigour to their efforts. The ball was becoming increasingly slippery and many goals were lost through inaccurate shooting but, after scoring alternately, the final whistle found honours even. Miss Valentine was referee.

Moturoa scored an easy win over Inglewood in the B grade, although the scores were only 5 —3 at half-time. On resuming play, Moturoa showed themselves obviously the better team, and scored five goals, while they managed to keep their own citadel intact. Heavy rain spoilt play in the concluding stages of the game, and Moturoa beat Inglewood by 10 to 3. Miss Valentine refereed.
