GIRL GUIDE’S ANNIVERSARY. The celebration of the Patea Girl Guides’ second anniversary was held in St. George’s schoolroom on Saturday evening, Mrs. P. S. Finlayson, president, presiding. Visitors included Mrs. Houston (Divisional Commissioner), Miss R. Hawken (District Commissioner), Lieuts. Alice Gibbs and R. Burnand (Alton), and several members of the Alton Company. The Mayoress (Mrs. F. Ramsbottom) was also present. The hall was tastefully decorated with chrysanthemums, autumn leaves, and coloured paper streamers, the work of Mrs. Carey and Miss E. Hamerton.
The visitors were welcomed by the president, after which the gathering sat down to a splendid banquet. Each of the birthday cakes for the Guides and Brownies bore two candles, those on the former being lit by ’ Post Guide Elsie Couchman and blown out by Guide Jean Carey, and those on the latter by Joyce Finlayson and Betty Stewart. The cakes were cut by SAirley Roberts and Nellie Carey respectively. The president congratulated the companies on the successful completion of two years’ work, and wished them every success in the future.: It gave her much pleasure to present a. silver cup donated by Guide Shirley Roberts for yearly competition among the patrols. Thanks were also expressed for Mrs. C. Honeyfield’s kind offer of ai trophy for furthering the ideals of the movement. The officers were to be congratulated on the success of their work, and hearty thanks were due to thosemembers of the association who had assisted in making the party so successful. The Guides then gave a drill demonstration, followed by an action song. The Brownies received with delight a woolly owl mascot of unusual design, A present from the divisional commissioner, Mrs. Houston. Badges were presented as follows:—Tenderfoot, L. Bond, G. Reid, M. Robins; Second class, E. Fraser, C. Reid and O. Williams; patrol leader, E. Clarkson and M. Kettles; service stars, J. Carey, E. Balsillie, N. Green, P. Delargey, L. Willis, K. McKenny, Joan Nelson, J. Warner, V. Sheild, C. Clarkson, G. Masters, E. Fraser, J. Smith, 11. Blackmore, M, Geary, Capt. T. Gibson, Lieut. Masters, Lieut. A. Gibbs, Lieut. Burnand, Brown Owl M. Hamerton, Tawny Owl M. Beamish, and Pack Leader E. Tong. Post Guido Elsie Couchman was presented with her second class badge, the ceremony being performed in quite a regal manner.
Brownies received badges as follow:— second class, J. Finlayson; service stars, N. Carey, J. Finlayson, M. Williams, 11. Fraser, J. Hills, K. Hills, V. Hunger, M. Na is mi th, ~M. Roots, J. Stokell, C. Bennie, P. Hermon, J. and Z. Delargey, and E. Willis.
Tho remainder of the evening was spent in true Guide fashion, singing songs round the campfire.
SCHOOL HEATING FUND.
A meeting of those interested in the Patea school heating appeal was held on Friday, Mr. R. E. Moore presiding. Mesdames Nelson, Papps, C. Carey, Martin, Messrs. Marshall, Papps, Nelson, Mays, Aker, Mathews and Hemingway were also present. The canvassers reported as follows: Mrs. Papps, £4 17s; Mn> Nelson, £lO Ils 6d; Mrs. Carey, £5 Ids: Airs. Martin, £3 15s Cd; Mr. Marshall, £1 ISs; Mr. Mays. £4. 15s Cd; and .Mr. R. Moore,' £5 3s .f.id: making a total of £36 Ils.
The canvassers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their splendid effort, as was Mr, Hemingway for his Press services.
The amount oversubscribed was reserved fox’ the extension of the heating system to the central hall.
_ Dlrs Martin, the only canvasser outside the school committee, vas accorded a vote of thanks for her interest and assistance.
The local school will shortly be equipped with a central heating system which will ensure the youngsters being kept comfortable during the winter months. . AUROA NEWS. On Friday evening the second of the weekly series of euchre and ping-pong parties was held in the . Auroa Hall, when there was again a very large attendance. Misses Lyndon and Bigham and Mrs. Kruse tied and on drawing for- the prize Miss Lyndon won, receiving an? afternoon tea set complete. Mr. Harris A won the men’s prize, a shaving stand;’and mirror. Mr. Ilunia received the ping-pong prize, an electric torch.
The evening was devoted also to dancing, the music being supplied by Mrs. 11. Wood.
On Saturday another meeting is to be held to arrange for the farewell to the Bigham family. * The members of the W.D.F.U. meet next week to make further arrangements for the supper of the Farmers’ Ball.
Mr. and Mrs. P. Duggan are motoring through the Waikato to. Rotorua. Mrs. Evans took up her new duties at the local school on Monday morning. This afternoon a football team from the local school will go to Kaponga, while the Auro'a hockey girls will go to Hawera. MANUTAHI EVENTS. Jt was with deep regret that the settlers of Manutahi learned of the death of Mr. R. Cornwell. Mr. Cornwell was a resident of the Manutahi and Hurleyvillo districts for many years. There he was engaged in active farming. Two years ago he retired and with Mrs. Cornwell went to live in New Plymouth. Mrs. Death and daughter, of Hawke’s Bay. Jiave been spending a few days with her sister, Mrs. I*'. Robinson. Mr. and Mrs. Hill, who have been staying with Mrs. Baldwin, met with an accident while returning to To Aroha. The ear was much damaged and the occupants received minor injuries. While proceeding, along a newlyformed road towards Mr. 'outhcombe’s. residence, 11 heavy car driven by Mr. A. Jones skhldedj over a bank. Fortunately Mr. Jones was travelling very slowly and no damage resulted. After Mr. Jones had secured a team of horses illte car was returned io th© road.
