AWATUNA TOPICS

88-UNION OF OLD-TIMERS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Friday night the Awatuna hall was the meeting place of many old friends who had not seen one another for many a day. What with reminiscences and several old-time dances the evening will rank in the minds of the old-timers as one of the happiest gatherings of the year. Though not crowded, the hall had just sufficient to make good dancing possible and the M.’sC., Messrs. Bourke and Palmer, by judiciously sandwiching in modern dances, not only catered for the younger ones but also gave a “breather” to those who find dancing more strenuous than of yore. Mr. 'and. Mrs. Collins (Te Kiri) provided really good old-time music, the piano and violin blending most harmoniously. Mr. Jeffreys played several dance tunes on his accordeon with a verve that set the toes a-tingle, whilst extras played by Miss I. Corbett and Mrs. Chubb completed a musical programme suited to all tastes. The grand march was led off by Mr. M. W. Barker and Mrs. J. Searle (New Plymouth) and Mr. and Mrs. Bourke (Awatuna), others in the procession being Mr. and Mrs. Badland, Mrs. Borrie and Mrs. Sproule (Manaia), Mr. and Mrs. C. Voullaire, Mr. and Mrs. A. Walker, and Mr. E. Bateman (New Plymouth), Mrs. S. Forsyth (Pihama), Mr. and Mrs. W. Brown (Auroa), Mrs. Street (Kaupokonui), and Mr. and Mrs. W. Graham (Matapu).

After a speech of welcome to the visitors by Mr. M. W. Barker, the latter expressed appreciation of the neverfailing readiness of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Collins to play for their old pals. To still further mark this appreciation and provide a reminder of those gathered there that night, Mr. and Mrs. Collins were presented with an attractive salad bowl and a silver cigarette ease. Mr. Collins replied most feelingly after which musical honours were accorded. The supper arrangements were in the hands of the younger ones, who most creditably and attentively carried out their duties. COLLISION NEAR THE STORE. On Sunday, soon after midday, a Dodge car driven by Mr. Cadman collided -with a Ford car driven by Mr. Cameron. The accident occurred close to the store where the Auroa and Eltham roads intersect. Fortunately, though there were several passengers including children, no serious injuries were sustained, in spite of the Ford being overturned-and an adjacent power pole being badly knocked out of the straight. Both the cars were much damaged, but Mr. Cadman was able to drive away after a while. Dr. Grey, of Kaponga, and the Misses Farquhar, Awatuna, who are both nurses, were very soon on the spot to render first aid to the injured, whilst Constable Donoghue was also in attendance. Great relief was felt when it was found there were no fatalities, especially in view of the circumstances of the accident which at first threatened to result in a grave fatality.

GENERAL ITEMS.

It is some time since there was a service on Sunday at Awatuna, and it is hoped that the service last Sunday will be the first of several. On Sunday evening also there was an evangelistic meeting at the hall. Two more of these meetings are to follow. Keenest regret is felt by the many friends of Mr. and Mrs. John Boyd who have left Awatuna. Though resident here only a short time, they had become endeared to all those with whom they had come in contact.
