PLOT JUDGING. COMMENCED.

MEREMERE AND OHANGAI RESULTS.

Judging of root crops grown, by school children under the auspices of the South Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs commenced yesterday in the Ohangai and Meremere Schools’ districts. Sixteen plots of mangolds and carrots were visited, weighed and judged. The best plot seen yesterday was that of Laurie Philpott; Ohangai (mangolds), which weighed 104 1 } tons. Cliff Davison, Meremere, had -a crop which weighed 1033 tons. The best carrot crops yesterday were those of Colin Patchell, 58J tons, and Gwen Savage, 52£ tons. Both children belong to the Ohangai School. Messrs. A. J. Glasson (Agricultural Department) and Rod Syme (Taranaki Education Board) were the officers in charge of the judging. Awards made were as follows, the figures given representing the weight in hundredweights, and the points for weight (20), cultivation' (20) and quality (10):-— MOKOIA. (Carrots) , Reg. GENERAL ITEMS. Hawera is to have a visit to-day from the Director of Town Planning, Mr. J. W. Mawson, who will address a meeting at 8 p.m. in the municipal chambers.

The Hawera Ramblers’ hockey team to play Auroa at Hawera to-day, at 2.15 p.m., will be selected from the following.—Misses M.- and F. Woolliaras, N. Shannon, V. Griffen, A. Hay-ward-Johnson. A. Warcup, S. Schwieters, N. Adams, E. Rowe, R; Burnt!," E. Adams, V. Cam pi, F. Tayloi-, M. McLean, N. Davis and T. Ireland.

A meeting will bo held in the Hawera Borough Chambers to-morrow night to discuss the affairs of the Hawera Amateur Operatic Society and make plans for the production this season of “Going Up.” The meeting will be open all who are interested in the society.

A euchre.party and dance was held. in Mrs. R. Hughes’ barn, Manaia Road, last Saturday in aid of the Manaia branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, and as a result the funds will be augmented by about £3 10s. The prizewinners were Mesdames V. Klink,. W. O. Duncan and M. Brown, and Messrs C. Whalen, J. Laursen and D. Whalen. Music for the dances was supplied by the Ketemarae 'Maori orchestra, ’

The HawcraV Amateur Swimming Club’s dance will be held this evening in St. Joseph’s JETall. Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., will present the cups and trophies won during the past season.

Mr. C. H. Suisted, who is about to leave Hawera for Wellington, has disposed of his accountancy practice to Mr. T. F. McKenzie. The practice .will be carried on under the title of “Shisted and McKenzie,” at Mr.. Suistpd’s present office. Mr. McKenzie' associated with Messrs Walkley.. and Cameron 4 it ITawera for the past six vears. A" ■

The weekly euchre and ping-pong tournament will be held in the’'Auroa Hall on Friday evening, and will be followed by a dance. Prizes will be given for the evening’s contests and there .will be points prizes ’ fthe series. ~

The ravages of the recent southerly ■gales are to be seen in all- parts of ■South Taranaki, where boxthorn and barbary hedges, pine trees and even crops have been withered by the salt spray, even for miles inland. In the case of hedges the sides facing the wind are completely browned, while the lee sides are practically unaffected.

At th annual meeting of the Taranaki Egg-laying Competitions Society at Hawera on Monday night, the president (Air. D. Stewart) stated that the cost of feed for each bird in the last -competition was £1 6s 8d for the 50 weeks. The profit on the 57 birds engaged was at the rate of 6s 'per bird. Unfortunately the price of eggs had been low.. In a normal season the profit, on each fowl would probably be between 9s and 10s. . ■■

. The 4000 yearling trout now at the Tlawera Acclimatisation Society's hatcheries, the balance of the season’s supply, will be liberated in the Hawera lakes to-day if the weather is favourable. CYCLE ROAD RACE. The Hawera Amateur Athletic Club will hold a cycle road race this afternoon, the course being from Hawera to Okaiawa and back. Air. H.
