Cricket practices preparatory to the commencement of the fixtures in South Taranaki were held in fine weather at King Edward Park and on the country grounds on Saturday. Old Boys engaged at net practice, the Hawera Club members batted, bowled, and fielded as though in a match, and the High School senior eleven played, a friendly game with Eltham, who visited and vanquished the School team. Eltham batted first and made 131, J. Gower (20) and H. Donnelly (77) making great stands for the fourth wicket. No other batsman reached double figures. Gower notched two and Donnelly eleven fours in bright displays, Pacey bowled effectively and secured four wickets for 6 runs in three overs as opening bowler, while Stevens (two for 24), Whitehead (two for 30), Barker (one for 13), and Sturrock (one for 23) also captured wickets. School opened well and put on 67 before the first wicket fell, Sturrock (32) and Barker (45) scoring well. Thomas (20) was the only other double figure scorer. H. Donnellv took five wickets for 34. Th© cricket season opened yesterday in bright sunshine with a warm nor'wester blowing. The wickets were all of mid-summer hardness and in fairly good order, though an occasional bump disconcerted the batsmen on one or two of them. The best score of the day was made by Cox (Riccarton), who made his 124 by sound cricket. Linwood batted against St. Albans, making 376 for eight wickets (F. Smith 85, R. J. Read 47, F. Kerr 55). High School Old Boys, against Old Collegians, were all out for 144. Bowling for Collegians, Talbot took five wickets for 25 and Lester three for 37. Old Collegians lost four wickets for 02. Riccarton made runs speedily against East Christchurch, who were without last year's star bowler, McEwin. Riccarton had 318 on for seven uiekds (Cox 124, Powell 54). Sydenham had first strike against West Christchurch for 263 (J. Philpott 55, J. Young 79). Bowling for West Christchurch, Condliffe took four wickets for 40, Jefcoate three for 16, Moffat three for 81. West Christ church Jmve lost t"” wickets for 32.
