“RACING” AT AUCKLAND

DEMONSTRATION BY CROWD CUP WON BY LAUGHING PRINCE. P.N. GUINEAS FALLS TO PRODICE. By Tolegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Oct. 6. Owing to a misunderstanding at the start of the Mitchelson Cup, when half the field failed to start, a large section of the crowd at the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s spring ineeting at Ellerslie to-day became very hostile. There was a terrific uproar at the end of the race, the crowd storming the course and hooting for over half an hour. Police and the club officials were unable to cope with the crowd, which surged over the course, and when the next race commenced the straight was filled with several hundred hooting people. The horses had to" leave the birdcage through a side gate as the crowd refused to allow them to use the ordinary gate. Owing to the severe obstruction of the horses at the finish, it was decided to postpone the remaining races until Monday, when the gates will be thrown open to the public free, and the meeting will be concluded on Wednesday. Results are: — TRIAL HURDLES RACE. Of 400 govs. One mile and three-quarters. 3— SIAOSI, H. L. Russell’s, 10.5 (Bowden) 1 1 — POTOANUI, S. H. Crawford junr.’s . 10.9 (Sharkev) 2 PIET, J. The crowd tried to stop the leader ftt the last fence, but he went on to win easily by 20 lengths through the dense crush of spectators on the course proper. Syndicate was fourth. Time, 4min. 58sec. CROWD TAKES CHARGE OF COURSE. SIAOSI WINS TRIAL HURDLES. I (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland, Last N ight. Potoanui and Kawini were the prime fancies for the Trial Hurdles. Siaosi Jed after jumping the first hurdle and was never troubled to win easing up from Potoanui. with Piet third and Tinopono, Kawini and Quincoma next. The winner is going to make a classy hurdler. Potoanui did very well, as did Piet, who ran a surprisingly good race for a novice. Quincoma looked like being in the money till he hit hard two fences from home. Kawini raced a long way behind for most of the journey, but finished very well. Farndon fell when beaten two fences from home. PRODICE’S BRILLIANT FINISH. Episode. Toxeuma and Prodice headed k great pool in the Great" Northern Guineas. Toxeuma headed the early leader, Cashier, at the end of a furlong, but with half the distance covered Episode, Gold Money and White Wings were in a bunch clear of Toxeuma. Episode struck trouble there and dropped back. Toxeuma leading into the Straight with Gold Money and White .Wings almost on terms, and Episode, Staghunter, Prodice and Cashier all Showing up. Prodiee finished brilliantly to win decisively from Cashier, a good third, and Episode, Stagliunter and White Wings next. Episode got on the heels of White Wings at the halfmile and lost several lengths. Cashier was another unlucky in running, but Prodice won on her merits, as she came from well back. ORATION FINISHES STYLISHLY. Aussie was a lietter fancy than Pagineili for the Shorts Handicap. At the end of a furlong. Paganelli and

Oration went out, and they were clear at the turn from Lady’s Boy and Benzora. Oration finished in fine style to beat Paganelli by two lengths, with Benzora a length away third, followed by Prince Otto, Lysander and Kaiti. The winner showed phenomenal speed from the outside position and outstayed the brilliant Paganelli. Benzora ran a fair race after having every chance, but Aussie and Nancy Lee cut up very badly. Commendation played up and was left at the post. HALF FIELD STAYS AT POST. The Mitchelson Cup was spoiled by half the field, including Star Stranger, Te Kara, Valkon, Catkin, Mint Leaf, Sir Archie and Tidal, staying at the post, their riders, with the general public, being under the impression that it was no start. Transformer and Papatu led for most of the journey, but Desert Glow led into the straight, only to be overhauled by Laughing Prince, who beat that horse comfortably, with Mask third and Royal Mint fourth. Of those that started Laughing Prince was quite the best on the day. The starter declared that it was a true start. The rider of Te Kara thought that the larrier was released by his mount’s head, and he pulled up. Six others, evidently under the same impression, did likewise. After the race the crowd swarmed round the enclosure and made a tremendous demonstration, refusing to let the horses for the steeplechase leave the birdcage. CROWD DELAYS STEEPLES. After a long wait the horses were sent to the post by the back gate near the hill. When this race started the trouble was not nearly over, the crowd still thronging round the enclosure. Mashoor led on the hill the last time, with Pompeius, Marita, Rafferty and Importer closing up. Pompeius fell and brought down Rafferty, Marita and Importer, and Mashoor was left to beat Cui Bono by twenty lengths, with Clockwork and Syndicate the only others to finish. Excitement ran high as Mashoor came at the last fence, numbers of the crowd attempting to bar his progress. Safely over, his rider, McGregor, drew the whip and rode him through hundreds of excited spectators, who still tried to stop him, but he passed the post with the other finishers similarly being harassed by the crowd. It was fortunate that no spectator was killed, as matters would have been doubly serious. WOULD NOT BE PACIFIED. After this race the jockeys were weighed out for the Welcome Stakes, but the crowd refused to let them go out. Dr. Grant, one of the committee, then addressed the crowd, but his efforts to promote peace were unavailing and, in fact, made matters worse, as a bigger crowd congregated. It was then decided to declare the rest of the meeting off till 2 p.m. on Monday, when admission will be free, and the other three races run off, the second day being postponed till Tuesday. Tago San, Master Arch, Archangel and Roman Abbey also fell in the steeplechase, making eight falls in all. Tago San broke a leg anil was destroyed and four jockeys were injured. M. Conway sustained concussion, J. Sharkey slight concussion, S. Henderson a broken collarbone, and H. Dulieu fractured ribs. The crowd remained till about 5 o’clock and then dispersed. An inquiry into the running of Aussie was adjourned. Mashoor paid over half a century. RIOTS AT AUCKLAND. ANGRY SCENES AT ELLERSLIE. (By “Moturoa.”) The demonstration made by the crowd at the Ellerslie racecourse on Saturday is unprecedented in the history of racing in New Zealand, and is a reflection on the sporting fraternity in Auckland. Following on the unfortunate- false start at the Pakuranga meeting on the previous Saturday the incident is greatly to be regretted. Apparently, when the tapes went up, several of the riders failed to hear Mr. O’Connor’s call to go, and imagined that Te Kara, who had been fractious, had broken through the tapes, and the cries of some of the spectators seemed to bear this out. Queen Arch jumped out at the start, but when his pilot, P. Brady, heard the crowd calling out he pulled up after running some distance. The others who stayed at the post were Star Stranger, Te Kara, Valkon, Mint Leaf, Catkin and Tidal. The riders of the horses which stayed at the post admitted that the barrier went up properly, but the shouts of the crowd, combined with the fact that they had not heard the starter was their explanation for not starting.

As some of the best mile and a half horses in New Zealand, notably Star Stranger and Te Kara, took no part in the race, the contest was robbed of a great deal of its interest, and. detracts a great deal of merit from Laughing Prince’s win.

After hearing a deputation from the patrons, the stewards found that under rule 14, part 29, they were powerless to refund any money invested on the non-starters. The following race., the Hunters’ Steeplechase, proved to be a farce, the infuriated crowds surging on to the course proper and baulked the horses at the jumps, causing six to fall, the jockeys being fortunately not seriously hurt. _ Two of the spectators who took part in the riot were also conveyed to hospital. The stewards then had no option but to postpone the races until the crowd were in a more reasonable mood, and the concluding three races will lie held to-day and the second day’s races tomorrow. Owing to the hostility of the crowd, the horses for the steeplechase were not paraded and, with the starter, Mr. C. O’Connor, went to the post by wav of an alley on the hill enclosure. NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Moturoa.”) The Welcome Stakes, the Gordon Handicap and the Flying Handicap remain yet to be decided, and these events -will be run this afternoon. • • • * The Welcome Stakes, of 1090 sovs., five furlongs, will see a poor class field, and Supremacy, which spreadeagled the Avondale Stakes field, is likely to be a warm favourite and should run prominently. Hunting Day and First Money will probably be next in demand. # a # Twenty-four remain in the Gordon Handicap, one mile. Storm Fiend, by reason of his two victories at Avondale, is at the head of the list. Royal Lineage has been doing all that has been asked of him and he will appeal with 8.0. He may go out favourite, while strong opposition may come from War Officer and Arikitoa.

The first day’s programme concludes with the open “seven,” and a first-class field of sprinters will take their places. Awarere has been hitting out freely in track efforts, and his brilliant gallop over seven furlongs prior to the Avondale meeting indicates that he is in fine fettle. High Pitch, Flying Juliet and Thureby have recently figured on the winning list, and their good form recommends them. Lower down the list slick sprinters like Royal Doulton and Tinokoa must be remembered. Summed up, the public will most likely favour the chance of Awarere, Royal Doulton and Flying Juliet, with The Fox as a possibility.

Outstanding features of the second day of the A.R.C. spring meeting last year were the dead-lieat between Star Stranger (9.4) and Mask (8.12) in the King Edward Memorial Handicap, and Aussie’s sparkling victory in the Epsom Handicap under the steadier of 9.2. Prodice was made a hot favourite in the Musket Stakes after running a close third to Prince Humphrey and Freehold in the Welcome Stakes the first day, but could not get nearer than third to two moderates in Chit and Marion’s Birthday. The pair won only one race apiece last season. Only two runners lined up for the Onehunga Steeples and the favourite, Pendavies, won by the length of the straight from Glenotus. The Taranaki horse Manly ran his best race when he won the Normanby Handicap from Queen Arch and a large field.

Murray Aynsiy’s filly Qeuaecee faltered after passing the post at the end of a six furlong gallop, run in Imin. 13 3-ssec., the best of the morning. Examination revealed a broken leg. and she had to be destroyed. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) The Dunedin J.C. spring meeting takes place on Thursday and Saturday. The Masterton R.C. spring meting, a one-day gathering, will be held on Saturday. • « « » On Tuesday weights should appear for the Wellington, Waverley and Waikato meetings. The imported horse Cynic was represented by a brace of winners recently, Ballyfarnon winning at Hastings and Moy Hall at Ellerslie. * * * * The clashing of dates between the Rangitikei Racing Chib and the Manawatu Trotting Club has been amicably settled, the Racing Club adhering to its appointed dates, March 6 and 7, while the Trotting Club meeting will be held on March 13. ss . «• a «i When Mr. C. G. Maclndoe was asked to put a price on Prince Humphrey he asked 6000 guineas, but tlie w’ouldbe buyer would not go above 4000 guineas. The Australian is now probably regretting his timidity, as, apart from the colt’s Derby winnings, the honour of owning a winner of the Australian blue ribbon is "one which is very highly thought of. It appears as if Mr. M. Hartigau’s perseverance with Contralto’s progeny is going to be rewarded at last, her daughter by Campfire showing promise in her training gallops. Emberalto has the breeding, and may turn out a worthy successor to Skylight, who carried Mr. Hartigau’s colours with success a few years ago. o is *

If “time” counts for anything, Childsplay’s half-brother, Upheaval (by Winning Hit) is something in the nature of a Aying machine. At Riccarton one day last week he scampered over three furlongs in 36 2-ssec. His appearance in the Welcome Stakes is looked forward to with interest.

Although the present racing season has advanced only a couple of months, Royal Game has been saddled up on no less than ten occasions. Last season he contested 38 races. Others that are being made to earn their oats this season include Grand National, who has been saddled up eight times. Beaumont, Brigadier Bill and Lieutenant Bill have each had seven races, and Mint Leaf, Taboo and Pangolin six each. , ss a? « « Prior to Saturday’s racing, A. E. Ellis was the leading jockey for the new season, his winning rides numbering 11. R. Reed and R. J. Mackie were next with 9 apiece, followed by T. Metcalf (8) and T. Green (7). The successful Awapuni trainer, Geo. New, and the veteran, Fred Tilley, had each led in five winners. # # ft Reversal of form is not viewed as lightly in India as in New Zealand, as instanced by a happening at Poona recently, when a horse named Robert, after running unplaced on the first day, romped home on the second, and tlia stewards lost no time in withdrawing the jockey’s license and in notifying the owner —a prominent man, too—that his entries were liable to be refused in future. ess# The Rangitikei Racing Club is contemplating alterations and additions to its members’ stand, and there is little doubt that improvements were needed for some time. The press room is a “pokey” little crib, lower than the outside balcony, and instead of giving working (or “elbow”) room to the dozen or more pressmen present at the annual meeting, it is only fitted for about onehalf that number. Another drawback is the inconvenient position of the jockey’s board, necessitating a tiresome trip down and' up a “one-man” stairway, which is often blocked with traffic, in order to ascertain particulars of riders, overweights and allowances. # * #

Of the 49 horses entered for I be New Zealand Cup, 25 have survived the first acceptance, and the most pleasing feature is that the top-weights, in fact all weighted above 7.5, have been paid up for. The presence of Star Stranger, Count Cavour. Rapier. , Beacon Light, footfall, Sol Sail and Pink Note at

the top of the handicap gives ths big “two miler” a promising appearance, and lower on the list are promising ones like Bisox, Oratrix, David Garrick, Hoylake and Blimp. The withdrawals were little fancied, and included Tresham, Crown Area, Battlement, Lady Desmond, Taboo, Benannee, Town Bank, Vaward, and others of very little aci count. “AUSSIE" NOTES. A number of New Zealand-bred horses figure amongst the entries for City Tattersall’s meeting, which takes place on Saturday next. Prince Humphrey, In the Shade, First Acre, Satrap and Perception are engaged in the City Handicap, on© mile and a-quarter, and Boston, 'Clarendon, Gold Tinge and Amplifier in minor events. »** _ « Boston, by Tea Tray (imp.)—Lady Cilia, vi as sent out favourite in a division of the Park Stakes at Hawkesbury on September 22, but could only struggle into third place. Boston carries the colours of Mr. H. P. F. Blundell, and is trained at Randwick by Geo. Price. As a two-year-old, the half-brother to Gasbag started four times in New Zealand, but failed to gain a place. Bred as he is he should stay later on, and may come good before the season ends, ft ft * « On the same day at Hawkesbury, Oratrix, with Ashley Reed up, was a wellbacked runner in the Spring Handicap, run over a mile and three furlongs. The imported horse, Sharp Son (Son-in-Law-—AVist), was a screaming hot favourite, and led all the way, winning by six lengths. It was left to Oratrix to chase the English horse home, but the mare’s second in a large field encouraged Mr. R. J. Murphy to run her in the. Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick, and she beat all but Jocelyn and rewarded her owner with 1200 sovs. as a solatium for second placing. Oratrix does not appear in either the Caulfield or Melbourne Cups, which is unfortunate. Hence her speedy return to New Zealand to fulfil Trentham and Riccarton engagements. » » # « Quite a good price was offered against Amplifier (Leighton imp.—Ladjr D.) in the three-year-old handicap avHawkesbury, Kavalli and Cleave being equal short-priced favourites. Kavalli. justified his position in the market by winning comfortably, and Amplifier just gained second money by a narrow margin. Amplifier started seven times in the Dominion last season, and although he finished in second place four times, failed to win a race. The best effort he showed was in the Sapling Stakes at Napier Park in the autumn, when, with 8.0, he ran Raasay (9.13) to a neck, ft ft ’ #' • Two New Zealanders were in. the limelight at the Kensington pony meeting on September 19. They were Flicker (Paper Money, imp.-—lllume), and Noveau Riche (Absurd, imp.—Class). Flicker earned place money on four occasions in New Zealand last season, but her size was against her, and it was decided to give her a chance to distinguish herself amongst horses of her own height. The move was a good one, for she has proved a very payable proposition amongst the ponies. In her recent victory she carried 9.0 and ran the 51 furlongs in 1.6, a course record. The other New Zealander, Noveau Riche, ran a dead-heat with Streamer in a division race, but was beaten in the run-off. ft ft ft ft Prior to the Australian J.C. meeting Trainer F. McGrath gave it out that Amounis was never better in his life, and if no rain fell before the meeting he expected him to win the Epsom Handicap. That his judgment was correct the result proved, and the brown son of Magpie and Loved One went out better on Wednesday, when he easily won the Craven Plate from Fourth Hand. Prince Humphrey, Limerick, Jocelyn and Valamita.
