HOME FORWARDS SUPERIOR VISITORS MAKE MANY MISTAKES. 31 POINTS SCORED AGAINST 26. By Telegraph.—Press Assoc.;.:.on. Invercargill, Last Night. Before an attendance of 6000 people to-day, Southland defeated the New South Wales touring team by 31 points to 26. The conditions were ideal for football and the ground was in good order. The features of the game were the splendid display of the Southland forwards, who were superior to those ot the visitors, and the large number of penalties awarded against the visitors. Play opened in spectaculai - fashion. Within two minutes Loudon secured the ball and, eluding the home players, fell over to score an easy try. Croft failed to convert. The home team attacked in retaliation, but a passing movement broke down. Southland persisted for a time but Bland got away to be brought to earth by Roberts. A minute later the Welshmen had a clear field ahead but failed to take advantage of the opportunity and play swung into their territory. McLeod kicked the ball out in a dangerous position for the visitors and in the resulting scrum New South Wales were penalised and Diack kicked a neat goal, making the scores equal. A passing movement by the Southland backs was cleverly broken and New South Wales pressed hard, but Oughton cleared. Weak passing by the visitors sow Southland on the offensive, but New South Wales cleared. Hemingway secured and dashed off, eluding Oughton and having a clear field. Geddes, following up fast, tackled him as he fell across to score. Abbott missed with the kick. A few moments later a retaliatory attack by Southland saw McEwan gain possession and set off. Just as he was tackled he passed to McAuliffe, who scored. Diack converted, and Southland -were in the lead by 8 to 6. Towers then put in a brilliant run, threw off Bell and badly fooled Oughton to score in a convenient position. He failed to goal. Southland then attacked vigorously and from a melee on the line McEwan obtained possession and fell over. Diack missed with the kick. Southland kept up the offensive and Johnson potted a goal which earned the plaudits of the crowd and made the scores: Southland 15, New South Wales 9. Th® visitors ' took a turn at attack, but Oughton cleared. Southland were penalised and Biand had a shot at goal which missed. The ball then went out in dangerous territory for New South Wales and Johnson, securing from the line-out, dived but fell short. New South Wales were then penalised and Diack took full advantage of the opportunity. Southland were in turn penalised and the kick just missed, the ball hitting the j post. Southland swiftly carried play to the other end of the field, nearly getting across. New South Wales were penalised and Diack had a shot at goal which just fell short, but Geddes, following up quickly, snapped up the ball and scored. Diack converted. A fine burst of play on the part of the visitors occurred when Croft secured and made a brilliant run, throwing off the Southland backs, but ho was stopped by Oughton before he fell. Ho transferred to O'Connor, who in turn passed to Hemingway, who scored. Bartley converted with a good kick, and at halftime the scores were: — Southland 23 New South Wales 14

Croft missed with the kick, making the scores: Southland 28, New South Wales 26. An attack by Southland followed, Geddes showing out. Bell intercepted a rush by the visitors and play returned to New South Wales territory. New South Wales were penalised but Diack missed. Southland pressed and Geddes passed to Bell, ■who was robbed. Southland were awarded a penalty and Diack made a splendid kick. The visitors were penalised, and Southland confined play to New South Wales territory, but New South Wales were awarded a penalty and a long kick placed the ball in Southland territory, from which it returned a few seconds later. New South Wales were penalised and a good kick by Diack just fell short. New South Wales were attacking when the final whistle sounded with the scores:— Southland 31 New South Wales 26
