VOGEL TOWN SCHOOL

PRESENTATION TO MR. 0. L. ALLAN PROI'TCIENCY CERTIFICATES. There was a very large attendance of pupils, ex-pupils, parents and friends, at the Vogeltown School yesterday afternoon when, besides the distribution’ of proficiency certificates, presentations were made to Mr. O. L. Allan, who has been headmaster of the school since it was opened nine years ago, and is now retiring after 40 years’ service as a teacher. Among the apologies received was one from Mr. C. E. Bellringer, M.P. Tho Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), and Mr. 11. Dempsey, representing the Taranaki Education Board, both paid glowing tributes to Mr. Allan’s services, both as a teacher and as a citizen. His good work was appreciated, and it was to be hoped that he would continue to take an interest in education. Mr. W. H. Broome, chairman of the school committee, then asked Mr. Allan to accept a moquette easy, chair from the parents, and a handsome rug for Mrs. Allan. These were but very slight tokens of appreciation of what Mr. Allan hud done for the children who had passed through his hands, said Mr. Broome. Ben Berryman, dux of the school, on behalf of the pupils, presented Mr. Allan with a.Russian leather wallet, bearing an appropriate inscription. In a short speech, he conveyed to the headmaster the children’s very good wishes for a happy retirement. Miss King gave Mr. Allan, a volume as an expression of the goodwill of the teachers. Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths, a member of the first committee and of the present one, said he had been there to welcome Mr. Allan, and now lie had to farewell him. In the intervening years the speaker Fad come to know the headmaster as a man of worth, who was greatly respected in the community, not only for his excellence as a teacher, but as a citizen as well. He was always faithful to his duty. Proficiency certificates were presented ns follows by Mr. Broome:—-Douglas Allan, Ben Berryman, Dudley Blanchett, Ken Hamilton, William Liley, Harry Gray. Owen McAllum, Ellesmere Wood. Gwenda Moore. Joyce Townley, Jean Tippins, Beryl Hitchcock, Eileen Reed (competency). Full attendance certificates.—lsle Burrows, Ena Townley. Joyce Gates, Colin Jarman, Hector Hopkins, Geoffrey Tippins, Francis Hogg. Essie Hogg. Rita Allen, Eileen Reed, David Nicol, William Lilev. Mr. W. B. Grant, on behalf of the Agricultural Society, presented the shield for the winner of the potato growing competition, and offered his congratulations to the school on winning the trophy three times. Those present were th i entertained at afternoon tea by a committee of ladies.
