WEST END SCHOOL

INFANTS’ BREAK UP. The end of the school year for the infants of the West End School, New Plymouth, was reached yesterday, when they broke up for the Christmas holidays. Prizes were distributed to the children by Mrs. Hawker, wife of the chairman of the school committee, and subsequently proficiency certificates were presented to those who had qualified for them. Out of a class of 55 boys and girls who sat for the examination, 53 gained proficiency certificates and the remaining two, who entered the school late in the year, gained competency certificates. During the afternoon Miss Mynott, who is leaving the school this year after a very long service, was presented by the staff and pupils with a silver tea-set as an expression of the esteem in which they hold her. The presentation was made by Daisy Gooday, a pupil of Miss Mynott’s for many years. Remarks eulogising Miss Mynott’s work were made by the chairman of the school committee (Mr. Hawker) and the headmaster (Mr. J. Thomas). Miss Mynott appropriately acknowledged the compliment, thanking the donors sincerely for their gift and stating that she would always take a keen interest in the school with which she had had such long and pleasant associations. Mrs. Hawker and Miss Mynott were during the afternoon presented with bouquets by two of the pupils. To-day the school will actually breakup for the holidays, celebrating the occasion with a sports meeting at Kawaroa Park.
