ATHLETICS.

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB. EVENING MEETING. The second to last series of races for the points’ prizes was held last night under the auspices of the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club. Good fields faced the starter in each race and some close and exciting finishes resulted. Miss Coad again appeared and contested the 220 yards race with the male members. She ran a great race, and was unlucky not to be placed. Miss Coad possesses a powerful stride and a good style and only needs experience. Next Tuesday the last of the series will be run when a 440 yards race will be held for both divisions. The javelin will also be on the field. The entries for Boxing night close on December 23. The results of last night’s races are: Junior Mile.—Hingston (50yds) 1, Robertson (scr.) 2, Cottan (35yds) 3. Hingston came up with a rattle at the finish and just beat Robertson, who had gained the lead in tbe last lap by a yard. Cottam was 5 yards away third. Time, smin 47sec. Also started: Geddes, Haymer. Maiden, 220yds.—Pankhurst (25yds) 1, Taylor (15yds) 2, Miss Coad (40) Won by 3 yards. Time, 24sec. Pankhurst gained the lead half way round and held it right to the end. Also started: Shrimpton, Meuli. 220Yds Open.—Jackson (10yds) 1, Warner (syds) 2, Dickson (20yds) 3. Won by 2yds. Time, 24 4-ssec. Dickson led into the straight with Warner and Jackson coming up fast. About ten yards from the tape Jackson jumped to the front and maintained hie lead. Dickson is a new member and ran a great race. One Mile Opep.—Julian (ser) 1, Tuffery (syds) 2, Pemyarden (syds) 3. Won by three yards. Time, 4min 31 sec. Jackson, Penwarden and Julian led the field most of the way round with the rest a long way back. Julian gained the lead early in the last lap and Jackson fell back to fourth place. Just before the straight Tuffery challenged, but Julian had too big a lead and was not passed.
