BRITISH TRADE UNIONS
COMBATING COMMUNISM GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE MR. BALDWIN’S STATEMENT By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dee. 15, 8.10 p.m. London, Dee. 15. Mr. Baldwin, in a letter to the Conservative candidate at th© Smethwick election, says: “Th© promotion of industrial unrest by Communists with the intention of driving the workers into the ranks of the revolutionaries is cruel and callous, and must be stopped. We must prevent Communists misusing the power of the trade unions for their wicked ends. We have no intention of destroying or weakening trade unionism, but intend to make it a real industrial organisation, which can speak for the workers without any suspicion of a sinister purpose behind its arguments.” The by-election campaign is a most lively one, and is characterised by personalities on account of Mr. Oswald Mosley’s candidature as a Labourite. He is being actively assisted by his wife, Lady Cynthia Mosley, who is asked at nearly every meeting: “Why don’t you distribute your own wealth?”
