STRANGE MYSTERY.
CASE OF AUCKLAND GIRL. MOTHER AND DAUGHTER MEET. NEARING CONCILIATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland Last Night. There were interesting developments today in l respect of the case of the Epsom Grammar Schoolgirl, Miss Margaret Martin, who left her home at 25A Carlton Gore Road on September 18 and was missing in baffling circumstances for a week. The girl and her mother, Mrs. D. G. Martin, were brought together thte afternoon at a special conference arranged for the purpose, which was also attended by several parties and the legal representatives concerned in the case. The Catholic Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Cleary) was also present.
It is stated that the somewhat remarkable circumstances of this singular case were discussed in a conciliatory spirit. No official report of the meeting was obtainable, each of the principals and their representatives appearing to prefer that if any statement should be given at all it might be made by the other. It was made dear, however, even in the circumstances of the reticence, that the principals were at least brought nearer to a prospect of a complete reconciliation. Some features of the case ar e still enveloped in mystery. No information has been disclosed as to where or with whom the girl had been housed. All wer e agreed, however, that the girl had been well cared for. The Grammar School Board gave consideration in private to another side of the case as far as the Epsom school was concerned, and later official declaration was made that the board finds it impossible to connect the Epsom Girte’ Grammar School in any way with the disappearance of Miss Martin.
A more intimate conference will be held to-morrow between the mother and her daughter, and those interested in it appear to b© confident that its result will make a pleasant end to a strange story.
