FLAX-MILLING DISPUTE.
APPEAL BY MILLERS. PAY FOR CUTTING. 1 By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, Sept. 23 The Arbitration Court is hearing a dispute in connection with the flax-mill-ing industry, it being in the nature of an appeal by the millers against the rate of pay fixed per ton for cutting flax by t’he side leaf method. Mr. Hammond, for the millers, said that under the award governing the. parties it was provided that if new machinery was introduced or any new methods adopted therewith should he replaced by mutual agreement. Failing that, the question should be referred to the Inspector of Awards. Th? demand made on millers was for £1 pf*” ton of flax ent by the side-leaf method. The parties had failed to reach an agreement and the dispute had been referred to the inspector, who had fixed the rate at lbs 74d per ton. Against that sum the case was brought to the Court. The millers alleged that the rate was exo bitant. The rate for cutting under the old system was 7s. The case proceeding.
