CHAUTAUQUA.

NEW PLYMOUTH PROGRAMMEAn interesting programme marked the Chautauqua session at the Whiteley Hall. New Plymouth, last night. The first portion consisted of songs and recitations by Miss Eileen Pasco-Webb. Possessing a contralto voice of range and sweetness, and a well-developed dramatic instinct, Miss Pasco-Webb quickly made friends with her audience. as the numerous recalls made manifest, whilst the pianoforte solos of her colleague. Miss Lesbia Dobson, who also acted as accompanist, were much appreciated. Dr. Arthur D. Carpenter. a former Chautauqua visitor to New Plymouth, lectured on scientific investigation of the universe and the r «ncbis'nns arrived at therefrom. Takine as his subject the query, “Who Made God?” th** lecturer maintained that the more thoroughly science enabled the story of the universe to be investigated the more was an inquirer farced to the conclusion that behind and ♦hrengl-niit the illimitable Time and -pace of the, universe there ia a universal intelligence, as distinct an entity a-- both Time and Space, permeating an>l controlling both. To learn what this may mean to the individual was no le«<on of an hour It entailed careful, painstaking, scientific research. Evolution in such research was always goin? on. The daring conception of one gen* ration was the truism of the next, whilst the result of such careful and scientific investigation into spiritual matters would be an increased power for good in any walk of life.
