WHEY BUTTER.
A DISTINGUISHING BRAND. REGULATION TO BE GAZETTED. A. regulation is to be gazetted by the Department of Agriculture providing for a distinguishing brand for boxes of whey butter. In a circular letter to the dairy factories, the director of the dairy division Mr. W. M. Singleton, refers to a report that boxes of whey butter are sometimes passed on to unsuspecting buyers on overseas markets as creamery butter, owing to a similarity in design of the brands used. As the result of representations by Mr. W. Wright, inspector of New Zealand dairy products in London, and others interested in the export trade, a distinguishing brand has been designed and endorsed by the Dairy Produce Export Contro’ Board. It takes the form of a hexagon, seven inches wide, bearing the inscription “Whey butter. New Zealand produce.” the word indicating the brand, the registered number of the factory, and the words. “561 b. net.” All printing is in red ink.
After pointing out that one-half dairy factories making whev butter use a word for the brand different from that which they use for their creamery butter or cheese, the director expresses the hope that the other half will follow the same practice.
