CHRISTMAS BUSINESS. ■RECORD ESTABLISHED. (Fpm Our Own Reporter.) Hawera, Deo. 27. Leading Hawera business firms report that trade during this Christmas season exceeded expectations and established a record. Competition was keener than it had been for years ,’and consequently shoppers were offered a very wide selection of goods at closely cut prices. A member of one firm which deals in ironmongery, leather and sports goods, stated that the Christmas trade commenced much earlier than usual, steady business in Christmas lines having been transacted for some weeks, and this statement was borne out by other tradespeople. Friday was a busy day. Saturday much better than usual, and on Christmas Eve the shops were invaded by seekers after gifts and other goods. The Post Office had a busy time during the past week, the number of telegrams handled constituting a record. The work of the office was considerably increased by reason of the fact that the large number of Savings Bank accounts recently transferred from New ■Plymouth to Hawera were freely operated upon. Traffic on the railway was fairly heavy, although the two special race trains to New Plymouth did not receive the patronage expected, a greater number of people making the journey by motor.
