MUCH DAMAGE DEPORTED. AN EXTRAORDINARY’ RAINFALL. Blenheim, Jan. 15. Heavy rain was experienced at Blenheim and throughout the district last night. It was of an extraordinary character at Picton, and considerable damage is reported in and around the town. The sudden flooding of the Waitohi undermined the bank near the ra : lway workshops, and a portion of the smithy was engulfed. The stream is bank high this morning. A small slip on the railway line at Elevat’on was quickly cleared, and the washout near Mount Pleasant did not interfere with traffic. Road traffic between Blenheim and Picton is blocked, as the road is under water.

IN NORTH CANTERBURY. SERIOUS DAMAGE TO CROPS. Christchurch, Jan. 15. The heavy rain in North Canterbury may do great damage to standing ripe crops, and will delay the threshing about Racecourse Hill, Waddingtoft and Sheffield. The rainfall. was very heavy and the creeks are in flood.
