THE SEAMEN’S STRIKE.
NO CHANGE IN POSITION. DOMINION EXECUTIVE MEETS. SEAMEN TO BE PROSECUTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last. Night. There is no change in the actual position of the seamen’s d : spute, and the vessels working under free labor are still running without any trouble- “Everything is satisfactory,” was the reply given to a reporter by officials of the Shipowners’ Federation, while the usual silence greeted an inquiry from Mr W. T. Young, secretary of the Seamen’s Federation. The Dominion executive of the Seamen’s Federation is in conference in Wellington at the present time, and is understood to be considering the dispute and what steps will be taken in the immediate future following on the demand of the employers for guarantees that the award will be observed in the event of the services of union seamen being accepted. An important incidental development is the decision of the Labor Department to institute proceedings against the seamen for having allegedly taken part in an unlawful strike, contrary to the provisions of section 5 of the Industrial, Conciliation and Arbitration Act. Summonses are being issued against individual seamen and firemen throughout the Dominion, and the Wellington cases have been set down for hearing on December 5. POSITION AT AUCKLAND. SEVERAL STEAMERS WORKING. Auckland, Last Night. Five steamers, including the Arahura, have obtained crews since Wednesday night, leaving eight, including five Union vessels, to be manned. Two small coasters, the Glenelg and the Mahurangi, have obtained their old crews again. POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. MAKURA STILL DELAYED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Nov. 24, 11.50 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 24. Owing to the seamen’s strike, two thousand wharf laborers have been rendered idle, and they have decided to ask the Government for relief. There is no sign of a settlement of the Makura dispute.
